Why is my hot water discoloured?

First: Hot Only, or Hot and Cold?

The Anode Rod and a Rusting Tank
Inside every tank water heater is a sacrificial anode rod, a metal rod designed to corrode in place of the steel tank, protecting it from rust. Over years, the rod is consumed. As it nears the end of its life, it can tint the hot water yellow or brown. Replacing a depleted anode rod is routine maintenance that extends tank life and can clear up discolouration if the tank itself is still sound.
The more serious scenario is when the anode is long gone and the steel tank has begun to rust from the inside. That produces persistent rusty hot water and, eventually, leaks. A rusting tank generally can’t be repaired, once corrosion is advanced, replacement is the right call, and continuing to run a badly corroded tank risks a sudden failure and water damage. Sediment and Flushing the Tank
Sediment is another common source of discoloured hot water. Minerals and debris settle at the bottom of the tank and can get stirred up, especially when hot water flow increases or after the supply is disturbed, cloudying or discolouring the hot water. If your discoloured water appears mainly at first draw or after periods of high demand, sediment is a likely factor.
Flushing the tank clears this buildup and often restores clear water. To flush, a technician (or a confident homeowner following the manual) drains the tank through the bottom valve until the water runs clear. Regular annual flushing prevents sediment from accumulating in the first place and also improves efficiency and capacity. On tankless units, discolouration is less common but scale and debris can still show up; descaling addresses it. If flushing doesn’t clear the water, or it returns quickly, the anode rod or tank corrosion is the more likely cause and warrants a professional inspection.
