HVAC Rebates in BC: CleanBC, BC Hydro and FortisBC

HVAC Rebates in BC: CleanBC, BC Hydro and FortisBC

British Columbia has some of the most generous home-heating rebates in Canada, and they can take a serious bite out of the cost of a new heat pump, furnace or smart thermostat. Programs and amounts change often, so use this as an overview and confirm the current offers before you buy. We are always happy to walk you through which rebates fit your project.

CleanBC and Better Homes BC

The provincial CleanBC Better Homes program has offered rebates for energy-efficient upgrades, with the largest amounts for qualifying heat pumps, especially when a home switches away from electric baseboard, oil or gas heating. Income-qualified households have been eligible for higher amounts. Combined with other incentives, heat-pump rebates in BC have reached several thousand dollars.

BC Hydro rebates

BC Hydro has offered rebates for electric homeowners who upgrade to an efficient heat pump, and a smart-thermostat rebate, recently $150, on eligible ENERGY STAR certified connected thermostats. These pair well with a heat pump or smart-thermostat installation.

FortisBC rebates

For homes heated with natural gas, FortisBC has offered rebates on qualifying high-efficiency furnaces and boilers, and incentives for adding a heat pump alongside or in place of a gas system. If you heat with gas, this is the program to check first.

Smart thermostat rebate

A connected or smart thermostat is one of the easiest rebates to claim, and the unit often pays for itself in energy savings on top of the rebate. See our thermostat services page for eligible models, and our smart thermostat guide for how to choose.

How to qualify

Most rebates require ENERGY STAR or efficiency-rated equipment, installation that meets program rules, and proper documentation such as invoices and model numbers submitted within a deadline. Many also require the work to be done by an eligible contractor. We can explain the requirements for your project and make sure your paperwork supports a claim, though the application is submitted by you to the program. Always confirm current amounts and eligibility at the official program websites before you count on a rebate.

Put rebates toward the right upgrade

Rebates change the math most on heat pumps. See real numbers in our heat pump cost guide, compare systems in the HVAC cost guide, or request a free estimate and we will factor current rebates into your options.

Because programs and amounts are updated frequently, we keep a running feed of announcements and program changes in our rebate news and updates. Check it alongside the official program pages before you finalise a budget.

Frequently asked questions

Which HVAC rebate is the biggest in BC?

Heat-pump rebates are by far the largest, particularly through CleanBC and BC Hydro when you switch from baseboard, oil or gas heating, with higher amounts for income-qualified households. Furnace and thermostat rebates are smaller but easier to claim.

Do you handle the rebate paperwork for me?

We make sure your equipment and invoices meet the program requirements and we explain exactly what to submit, but the rebate application is filed by you to the program. Programs and amounts change, so we point you to the current official details.

Are federal HVAC rebates still available?

Federal programs change frequently and have opened and closed over the years, so they are best confirmed directly with the federal program before you rely on them. Provincial and utility rebates in BC are usually the most dependable to plan around.
