Why does my boiler keep locking out?
A lockout is your boiler protecting itself. When it detects a fault it can’t safely operate through, it shuts down and displays an error rather than keep running. An occasional lockout after a power blip is one thing; a boiler that locks out again and again is telling you something needs fixing.

What a Lockout Is and Why It Happens
A lockout is a safety shutdown. Modern boilers constantly monitor ignition, flame, pressure, and temperature, and if any reading falls outside safe limits, the control board halts the boiler and shows a fault code. This is a feature, not a failure it prevents the boiler from running in an unsafe condition. The most common triggers are ignition failure (the boiler tries to light but can’t detect a flame), low water pressure, overheating, a blocked condensate pipe, and faulty sensors. A single lockout can be a one-off, and a reset may clear it. But repeated lockouts mean the underlying condition keeps recurring, and each reset only postpones it. Note the error code shown on the display it’s the single most useful piece of information a technician can have, because it narrows down which system triggered the shutdown before anyone even opens the boiler.
Ignition and Flame-Detection Failures
One of the most common reasons for repeated lockouts is the boiler failing to ignite or to prove a stable flame. This can be caused by a faulty ignition electrode, a dirty or worn flame-sensing probe, a gas-supply problem, or a fault in the gas valve. When the boiler can’t confirm it has lit safely, it locks out rather than risk pumping unburnt gas. Because every one of these involves the gas train and combustion, this is strictly technician territory. In British Columbia, work on gas appliances must be done by a TSBC-certified gas fitter it is not a DIY repair, both for safety and legal reasons. If your boiler locks out with an ignition-related code, resetting it repeatedly can waste gas and mask a genuine hazard. Pressure, Overheating, and Condensate Blockages
Low water pressure is a frequent lockout cause. If the boiler gauge reads below the normal range (often around 1 bar), the boiler may lock out to protect itself; topping up via the filling loop can restore it, but if pressure keeps dropping you have a leak that needs finding. Overheating lockouts happen when water can’t circulate properly often due to a stuck pump, closed valves, air, or sludge so heat builds up and the safety thermostat trips. On condensing boilers, a blocked or frozen condensate pipe is a very common winter lockout in our climate: the acidic condensate can’t drain, backs up, and trips the boiler. Thawing an external condensate pipe with warm (not boiling) water can sometimes clear it, but recurring blockages need a technician to reroute or insulate the pipe. Each of these has a safe first check, but repeated occurrences mean an underlying fault to fix.
When to Stop Resetting and Call a Pro
Resetting a boiler once is reasonable. Resetting it repeatedly is not it’s overriding a safety system without addressing why it tripped. As a rule, if your boiler locks out more than once or twice, stop and call a licensed technician with the error code in hand. And treat any of these as a stop-immediately situation: a gas smell, a carbon monoxide alarm, soot or scorching around the boiler, water leaking, or repeated ignition-related lockouts.
