Why pressure rises when the boiler heats

Heating systems are sealed and filled with a fixed volume of water. When the boiler fires and warms that water, the water expands, and because it has nowhere else to go in a sealed system, the pressure rises. This is normal physics and every boiler is designed for it. To manage the expansion, the system includes an expansion vessel, a sealed tank divided by a diaphragm with a cushion of pressurized air on one side. As the water expands, it pushes against that air cushion, absorbing the extra volume and keeping the pressure rise gentle and within a safe range. A typical healthy system might read around 1.2 bar cold and rise to roughly 1.5 to 2.0 bar when fully hot, then drop back down as it cools. As long as the rise is modest and the pressure returns to normal when cold, the system is working exactly as intended.

When the rise is a warning sign

The rise becomes a problem when it is large, when pressure jumps into the red zone, often above 2.5 to 3 bar, every time the boiler heats up. This almost always means the expansion vessel has lost its air charge or its diaphragm has failed. Without that air cushion, there is nowhere for the expanding water to go, so pressure spikes sharply. You may notice the pressure relief valve discharging water from the external pipe when the boiler is hot, then the pressure being low again once it cools, because water was forced out. This cycle of high-when-hot and low-when-cold is the classic signature of a failed expansion vessel. Repeatedly topping up and bleeding to manage it only wastes water and stresses the system.
