When it warms up, the curve lowers the target water temperature, since the home loses heat more slowly. The boiler then modulates or cycles to hit that adjusted target rather than always heating water to a high fixed setpoint.
The result is a boiler that runs longer, gentler cycles at lower average temperatures. That reduces the temperature swings you feel in a room, and it keeps condensing boilers in their most efficient range more often. The reset curve is tuned to your specific building and heat emitters during setup.
Why It Saves Energy and Improves Comfort
A boiler is most efficient — especially a condensing model — when it runs at lower water temperatures. Lower return water temperatures let a condensing boiler extract extra heat from the flue gases, which is exactly where its efficiency gains come from. Outdoor reset keeps the system in that favourable range whenever the weather allows.
Comfort improves too. Fixed-temperature boilers tend to blast heat, satisfy the thermostat quickly, then shut off, producing noticeable warm-then-cool swings. With reset, the water is only as hot as the day requires, so heat delivery is slower and more even, and rooms hold a steadier temperature.
Fewer, longer cycles also mean less wear on the boiler’s ignition and components. In our mild coastal climate, where much of the heating season is spent well above freezing, the cumulative fuel savings from not overheating water can be meaningful over a winter.
