Recognizing a Frozen or Frosting Core

The core is the heart of an HRV — a passive heat-exchange block where outgoing warm, moist air transfers its heat to incoming cold fresh air. There is no flame, refrigerant, or thermostat involved. In cold weather, the moisture in the outgoing air can freeze inside the core if the incoming air is cold enough. Modern HRVs run periodic defrost cycles, but in a deep cold snap, or if the unit is faulty, frost can build up and block airflow.

Typical symptoms include the HRV cycling oddly, ventilation that seems to stop in cold weather, water or ice near the unit when it thaws, and stale air or window condensation building up because fresh-air delivery has dropped.

Confirm the exterior hoods are clear so the unit is moving air freely, and make sure the condensate drain is not blocked or frozen.

If your indoor humidity is very high, lowering it reduces the moisture available to freeze. Keep an eye on whether the unit recovers once the cold passes and the filters and core are clean.
