What a PRV does
The pressure relief valve (PRV) is a critical safety device. It opens automatically when boiler pressure rises above its set point (typically 3 bar) to prevent dangerous overpressure. A dripping PRV is telling you the system pressure is too high or the valve is worn.
Why it should never be capped
Capping a PRV is illegal and dangerous. If the system overpressures without a working relief valve, it can cause the boiler to fail catastrophically. The right fix is to find and correct the cause of the high pressure.
The usual root cause
Most PRV leaks trace to a failed expansion tank that allows pressure to spike on every heating cycle. We fix the expansion tank, then replace the PRV if it has been damaged by repeated discharge.
