Is black water in my boiler radiators a problem?
Black or very dark water when bleeding a radiator is a sign of significant corrosion sludge in the system. Iron oxide (magnetite) from corroding steel pipes and radiators turns the water dark. This sludge reduces flow, coats heat exchanger surfaces, and causes pump wear. A power flush followed by chemical inhibitor dosing is the appropriate response.
