What is AC short cycling?

Short cycling is when your AC or heat pump starts up, runs briefly, shuts off, then starts again shortly after — repeating the pattern faster than a normal cooling cycle. A healthy system completes 2–3 full cycles per hour (each 10–20 minutes). Short cycling means the system isn’t completing those full cycles, resulting in poor cooling, high humidity, and accelerated wear on the compressor.

Common causes of AC short cycling

Oversized System

A system too large for the space cools the area quickly but doesn’t run long enough to dehumidify. The solution is a properly sized replacement system — bigger is not better in HVAC.

Low Refrigerant

Low refrigerant from a leak causes the system to trip a low-pressure safety switch and shut off. Requires leak detection and repair by a certified technician.

Dirty Coil or Filter

A dirty evaporator or condenser coil raises operating pressures, which can trip a high-pressure limit. Check and replace the filter, and call for coil cleaning if needed.

Failing Compressor

An aging or failing compressor may trip thermal overload protection shortly after startup. This is a serious issue that requires professional assessment.

Short cycling is hard on your compressor — the most expensive part of an AC system. Don’t ignore it. Call HeatLand for a diagnostic before a manageable repair becomes a compressor replacement.

Frequently asked questions about AC short cycling

What does AC short cycling mean?

Short cycling is when an AC or heat pump turns on, runs for only a few minutes (or even seconds), then shuts off — and repeats this cycle rapidly. A properly running system should complete 2–3 full cooling cycles per hour, each lasting 10–20 minutes. Short cycles indicate the system can’t complete a full cooling cycle and is shutting off on a safety protection.

What causes AC short cycling?

Common causes: an oversized system (too much capacity for the space, so it cools too fast and trips the thermostat before full dehumidification); low refrigerant charge; dirty evaporator or condenser coil; a failing compressor; a faulty thermostat; or a tripped high-pressure or low-pressure limit switch. Many causes require a technician to diagnose properly.

Is short cycling damaging my AC?

Yes — short cycling is hard on the compressor. Every startup creates high electrical and mechanical stress on the compressor. Frequent short cycles accelerate compressor wear. If your AC is short cycling, call for a diagnosis sooner rather than later to avoid a larger repair.

Can I check anything before calling a technician about short cycling?

Yes: check the air filter (replace if dirty), check that all supply and return registers are open and unobstructed, and check that the outdoor unit is clear of debris and vegetation. If those are all fine and the system is still short cycling, the cause is likely refrigerant, electrical or mechanical — call HeatLand for a diagnostic.

How much does short cycling diagnosis and repair cost?

Diagnosis is typically $100–$200 for a service call. The repair cost depends on the cause — a thermostat replacement might be $150–$300; a refrigerant leak repair $250–$800+; a compressor replacement $800–$2,500+. HeatLand provides a written estimate before any repair begins.
