Safe checks homeowners can do first

Before calling for service, try these homeowner-safe checks. They take 5 minutes and may save you a service call:

• Check the thermostat. Set the mode selector to “Cool” and the fan to “Auto.” If the thermostat is set to “Fan” only (no cooling), it will blow room-temperature air from the vents. If it is in “Heat” mode it will blow warm air.
• Check and replace the air filter. A heavily clogged filter blocks airflow so severely that the evaporator coil ices over — and ice on the coil prevents any heat exchange. Replace the filter, let the system thaw for 2–3 hours with just the fan running, then try cooling again.
• Check the outdoor unit. Make sure the outdoor condenser unit is not buried in leaves, overgrown shrubs or debris. Restricted airflow around the outdoor unit prevents it from releasing heat.
• Check the breaker panel. A split AC system has two breakers — one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor compressor. If the outdoor breaker has tripped, the fan may run inside but nothing is cooling.

Causes of warm air that require a technician

If the checks above do not resolve the issue, the problem is inside the system and requires a licensed HVAC technician:

• Low refrigerant (refrigerant leak) — The most common technical cause. Refrigerant does not deplete; if charge is low, there is a leak. Finding and fixing the leak, then recharging to spec, is the only proper repair. Refrigerant handling is restricted to certified technicians.
