What does a boiler air separator do?
Air is the hidden enemy of a hot-water heating system, and the air separator is the component built to defeat it. In Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley homes with hydronic boilers, this device keeps the system’s water free of trapped air so heat flows smoothly and quietly.
When air gets into a sealed heating loop — during filling, from fresh water, or as gases come out of solution when water heats — it collects in high points and pump areas. That causes gurgling, cold radiators, weak circulation, and accelerated rust.

How an Air Separator Works
An air separator is installed in the piping, typically near the boiler on the supply side where water is hottest. As water flows through it, the separator slows and redirects the flow — often around an internal element or through an enlarged chamber — which encourages tiny air bubbles to coalesce and rise out of the moving water.
The collected air gathers at the top of the separator, where an automatic air vent releases it from the system. Many modern designs, sometimes called microbubble separators, are very effective at capturing even the fine bubbles that ordinary vents miss, because they catch dissolved gases as they come out of solution in the hot water.
By continuously scrubbing air from the circulating water, the separator keeps the loop solidly full of water. That’s important because water — not air — is what carries heat around your home, and a system truly free of air runs quieter, circulates better, and resists corrosion far more effectively than one with trapped pockets.
Why Removing Air Matters
Trapped air causes a surprising number of heating complaints. Air pockets collect in radiators and high points, blocking water flow so those areas stay cold while the rest of the home heats. Air at the circulator can make the pump noisy or stop it from moving water properly, and you’ll often hear gurgling or trickling sounds through the pipes.
Just as damaging, oxygen in that air accelerates corrosion inside the system. It attacks steel components, pump parts, and the boiler itself, shortening equipment life and creating sludge that can clog the system over time. Keeping air — and therefore oxygen — out is a key part of long-term system health.
There’s an efficiency cost too. An air-bound system doesn’t circulate its full flow, so the boiler works harder to deliver less comfort. In our mild but long heating season, a well-de-aerated system heats more evenly and quietly and protects the investment you’ve made in your boiler and piping.
Signs of Air in Your System
The most recognizable symptom is sound: gurgling, trickling, or bubbling noises from radiators or pipes, especially as the system heats up. Cold spots are another giveaway — a radiator that’s cold at the top but warm at the bottom, or a whole zone that won’t heat despite the boiler running.
You might also notice a noisy circulator, uneven heating between floors, or the need to bleed radiators repeatedly. If air keeps returning after bleeding, it can indicate a leak drawing air in, a failing air vent, or an air separator that isn’t doing its job.
Bleeding individual radiators is a common homeowner task and can relieve minor trapped air. But recurring air, a separator or auto-vent that’s leaking or clogged, or persistent noise and cold spots point to a system issue. Those warrant a technician who can properly purge the system, check the separator and vents, and find why air is getting in.
