Powered (impressed-current) rods use a small electrical charge instead of sacrificial metal and never wear out, making them a good choice where rods deplete quickly or you want low maintenance.
One practical note: magnesium rods can react with certain water chemistry to produce a rotten-egg (sulfur) smell. If you notice that odour from hot water, switching to an aluminum or powered rod often resolves it.
