Why the condensate pump overflows

A condensing furnace pulls so much heat out of the combustion gases that water vapour condenses inside the unit and drips down to a collection point. Because that furnace condensate is slightly acidic, it can leave deposits and sludge that gradually narrow the pump reservoir, the float, and the discharge tubing. When the pump cannot keep up or cannot sense the rising water, the reservoir fills past the rim and spills onto the floor.

The most frequent culprits are a clogged discharge line, a float switch coated in slime so it no longer rises, a kinked or disconnected outlet tube, or a drain line that runs uphill or backs up. In older basements and garden suites here, the pump often has to lift water a fair distance to reach a laundry standpipe or sump, which makes any partial blockage show up as an overflow faster.
