Ruud Furnace not heating / not cooling in Greater Vancouver

Quick answer: When a Ruud furnace stops producing heat, the cause almost always sits in one of five areas: no call for heat reaching the furnace (thermostat, wiring, or a tripped breaker), no gas or no ignition at the burners, a safety device refusing to prove (pressure switch, limit switch, or a full condensate trap), airflow so restricted the furnace overheats and shuts down, or a blower that will not run. Start with the free checks — thermostat mode and batteries, the furnace switch, the breaker, the filter, and the gas shutoff — because a surprising share of no-heat calls end there. Anything beyond that means reading the diagnostic LED on your unit and getting a licensed technician on it.

It is nine degrees and raining, the thermostat says twenty-one, and the house says otherwise. Before you call anyone, spend five minutes on the checks below. Roughly a third of the no-heat calls we take in Metro Vancouver in a given winter end at a switch, a breaker, a thermostat battery, or a filter that has not been changed since spring.

The rest need a technician, and this page is written so you can tell the difference quickly. A Ruud furnace does not simply fail — it runs a sequence, and it stops at whichever step it cannot complete. Understanding that sequence tells you where in the machine the problem lives, even before anyone opens a panel.

One note on the cooling side: if you have air conditioning, your furnace is doing double duty as the air handler. A furnace that will not run means no cooling either, and the blower, capacitor and control board are shared between both modes. The five-minute checks before you call anyone

Thermostat first. Confirm it is set to Heat, not Auto-changeover or Off, and that the setpoint is genuinely above room temperature — a degree of difference may not trigger a call. If it is battery powered and the display is dim or blank, swap the batteries. If someone reprogrammed a schedule, a hold or vacation setting will happily keep the house at sixteen while you stare at the display wondering why.

Next, the furnace switch. It looks exactly like a light switch, usually mounted on a joist or wall within sight of the unit, and it gets flipped by accident constantly — during a garage cleanout, by a contractor, by a kid. Flip it on and wait a full minute. Then check the breaker panel. A furnace breaker that has tripped may not look obviously off; push it firmly to Off, then back to On.

Gas next. Confirm the gas shutoff at the furnace is parallel to the pipe, and confirm other gas appliances still work — if your range and water heater are also out, the issue is upstream of your furnace and belongs to the utility.

Then the filter. Pull it and hold it to a light. If you cannot see light through it, that alone can shut a furnace down on high limit. Put in a clean one of the correct size.

Finally, condensate. High-efficiency furnaces produce water, and if the drain line or trap is blocked, a switch shuts the furnace off deliberately. A full pan or wet floor near the cabinet is a strong clue.

How a Ruud furnace decides whether to run

Knowing the sequence turns a mystery into a location. Here is what happens after the thermostat closes the circuit.

The control board receives the call for heat. It energizes the inducer motor, which pulls air through the heat exchanger and vent. Once flow is established, the pressure switch closes, telling the board the venting path is clear. The board then energizes the igniter, which heats up. The gas valve opens, burners light, and the flame sensor confirms flame is present. If the sensor does not see flame within a few seconds, the board closes the gas valve immediately and retries. After a set number of failed tries, it locks out. Assuming flame is proven, the board waits, then starts the main blower.

Every one of those steps has a way to fail, and the furnace stops where it fails. That is why the symptom is so informative. Nothing at all happening means the call is not arriving or there is no power. Inducer running but nothing further means the pressure switch is not proving. Igniter glowing but no flame means gas delivery or ignition. Flame that lights then dies after a few seconds means flame sensing. Everything lighting fine but no air means the blower.

Once you can describe the furnace’s behaviour in those terms, a technician arrives already halfway to the answer instead of starting from scratch.

Blower runs but the air is cold

This is the single most common way people describe a broken furnace, and it splits into two very different situations.

If the thermostat fan setting is On rather than Auto, the blower runs continuously whether or not the burners are firing. Between heat cycles you will feel room-temperature air at the registers, which reads as cold when the house is chilly. Switch it to Auto and see if the complaint disappears.

If the fan is on Auto and you are still getting cold air during what should be a heat cycle, the furnace is moving air without making heat. That usually means the burners are not staying lit — most often a flame-sensing problem, where the sensor rod is coated with oxide and can no longer detect the flame it is sitting in, so the board shuts the gas off within seconds. You will sometimes hear it: whoosh, a few seconds, silence, then a retry. It is a classic and very repairable failure.

Other paths to the same symptom: the gas valve not opening, ignition failing repeatedly until lockout, or a limit switch cutting the burners while the blower keeps running to cool the exchanger.

Cleaning a flame sensor is often described online as a homeowner job. In British Columbia, work inside the burner compartment of a gas appliance belongs to a TSBC-certified gas technician, and doing it properly means checking sensor position and flame signal, not just scuffing a rod with sandpaper.

Short cycling: it starts, then quits, over and over

A furnace that fires for two or three minutes, shuts down, and repeats is telling you it is protecting itself. Airflow is the first thing to suspect. When not enough air moves across the heat exchanger, temperature climbs past the design range and the high-limit switch opens to prevent damage. The burners stop, the blower keeps running to dump heat, and once things cool the cycle restarts. Left alone, that repeated thermal stress is genuinely hard on a heat exchanger.

Causes of restricted airflow, in the order a technician usually finds them: a clogged filter, closed or blocked supply registers, an undersized or partially blocked return, a dirty blower wheel, and a plugged evaporator coil sitting in the supply plenum above the furnace. That last one catches people out — the coil belongs to the air conditioner, but it restricts heating airflow year round.

Short cycling also comes from other directions. A thermostat mounted in direct sun, above a heat register, or on an exterior wall will satisfy early and cycle constantly. Flame-sensing dropout produces a similar rhythm but with a much shorter burn. A pressure switch opening mid-cycle points to venting, a partially blocked intake or exhaust termination, or condensate backing up in the vent — all worth checking on Lower Mainland homes where terminations sit low and get blocked by leaves, snow drift or landscaping.

Start with the filter and registers. If clean airflow does not fix it, it needs a meter and a technician.

Nothing happens at all: power, control and safety circuits

Dead silence when the thermostat calls means the sequence never started. Work outward from the furnace.

Check that the door switch is being made — most Ruud furnaces will not run with the blower door removed or improperly latched, and a door pushed back on crooked after a filter change is a genuinely common cause of a totally dead furnace. Reseat the panel firmly.

Then power. The dedicated breaker, the furnace switch, and on some installations a fuse on the control board. A blown board fuse usually means a shorted low-voltage wire somewhere in the thermostat circuit — often a wire pinched during a renovation or chewed in a crawlspace. Replacing the fuse without finding the short just blows another one.

Then the thermostat itself. A modern smart thermostat that relies on power stealing can behave oddly on some furnace boards, and a common wire that was never connected will cause intermittent dropouts that look like random no-heat events. If your no-heat started shortly after a new thermostat went in, say so — that reframes the whole diagnosis.

And if the furnace is dead but has been running well, check for a lockout that requires a reset. A furnace that has locked out after repeated failed ignition attempts will sit silent. Cycling power resets it, but if it locks out again you have a real fault and you should stop resetting it and call. Repeatedly resetting a locked-out gas appliance is how small problems become dangerous ones.

When the same furnace will not cool

In most Lower Mainland homes with central air, the furnace blower is what moves the cooled air. So no-cool complaints often trace to furnace-side components rather than the outdoor unit.

If the outdoor condenser runs but no air comes from the registers, the problem is the blower, its capacitor, or the control board — the same parts that cause a no-heat call in January. If the blower runs but the air is not cold, look at the outdoor side: a condenser that is not starting, a tripped outdoor breaker, or a coil packed with cottonwood fluff and hedge clippings. Outdoor coils in Richmond, Tsawwassen and White Rock also take salt-air corrosion, which degrades heat transfer well before the unit actually fails.

Ice on the refrigerant line at the furnace is a specific signal: it generally means airflow is too low or refrigerant charge is off. Turn the system to Fan Only and let it thaw completely before anyone tries to diagnose it, because you cannot read pressures on a frozen coil.

A note on efficiency, since it comes up when people are deciding between repair and replacement: cooling and heating performance are rated under defined standards, and the only reliable figures for your equipment are on the manufacturer’s spec sheet or the AHRI listing for your exact model and coil combination. Repair or replace, and how a real estimate gets built

The honest version: there is no age at which a furnace automatically becomes not worth fixing. What matters is which component failed, whether the heat exchanger is sound, how the rest of the system has been maintained, and what you plan to do with the house.

A failed igniter, capacitor, pressure switch or flame sensor on an otherwise healthy furnace is a straightforward repair regardless of age. A cracked heat exchanger changes the conversation entirely, because that is a carbon monoxide issue and the furnace should not run. A blower motor or control board failure on an older unit sits in the middle, and the right answer depends on what else is likely to follow.

What drives the cost of a replacement, if it comes to that: correct sizing based on a heat-loss calculation rather than matching the old nameplate, the efficiency tier you choose, venting changes, gas line capacity, electrical work, condensate drainage, the condition and sizing of existing ductwork, and municipal permits — which vary between Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and the Fraser Valley municipalities.

Safety limits, and when to stop troubleshooting

Every safety device on your furnace exists because something can go wrong that hurts people. The rollout switch trips when flame escapes the burner box. The high limit opens when the exchanger overheats. The pressure switch refuses to let gas flow if venting is not proven. The condensate switch stops the furnace before water damages it. None of these are inconveniences to be worked around.

So the hard line: never jumper, tape, bypass or defeat a safety switch to get heat back. Never reset a locked-out furnace more than once. Never run a furnace that has soot marks on the cabinet, a burning or acrid smell, water pooling under it, or visible flame outside the burner compartment.

If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out of the house first. Call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside, and do not go back in to check the furnace or open windows. Working CO alarms on every level of the home are not optional in a house with gas appliances — test them when you change your filter and you will never forget.

Why is my Ruud furnace blowing cold air?

Two very different causes. If the thermostat fan is set to On instead of Auto, the blower runs constantly and you feel room-temperature air between heat cycles. If the fan is on Auto and air is still cold during a heat call, the burners are lighting and going out, most often a flame-sensing issue, or failing to light at all. Listen for a whoosh followed by silence and a retry.

My furnace keeps shutting off after a couple of minutes. Why?

That pattern usually means the high-limit switch is protecting the heat exchanger from overheating because airflow is restricted. Check the filter first, then confirm supply registers are open and the return grille is clear. A dirty blower wheel or a plugged AC evaporator coil above the furnace causes the same thing. Repeated overheating cycles are hard on a heat exchanger, so do not just live with it.

Can I reset my furnace myself?

Cycling power at the furnace switch once to clear a lockout is reasonable. Doing it repeatedly is not. A furnace locks out because it tried to start and could not confirm something safety-critical, and forcing repeated attempts on a gas appliance with a real fault is how a small problem becomes dangerous. If it locks out a second time, stop and call a licensed technician.

Why does my air conditioning fail when my furnace has a problem?

Because they share hardware. The furnace blower moves the cooled air, and the control board, capacitor and thermostat circuit serve both modes. If the outdoor unit runs but no air reaches the registers, the fault is usually furnace-side. If air moves but is not cold, look at the outdoor unit and its coil, which near the water also takes salt-air corrosion.

Is it worth repairing an older Ruud furnace?

It depends on the failed component, not the age. Igniters, capacitors, pressure switches and flame sensors are straightforward repairs on an otherwise sound unit. A cracked heat exchanger is different — that is a carbon monoxide concern and the furnace should not run.
