Then a quiet pause while the pressure switch confirms flow. Then the igniter glows, the gas valve clicks open, and the burners light with a soft whoosh. Roughly thirty to sixty seconds later the big blower kicks in and you feel air at the registers.
Write down which step your noise lands on. A bang before you feel any warm air is a burner event. A rattle that appears only when the registers start blowing is airflow or cabinet related. A hum that starts the instant the thermostat calls and never produces air is electrical. A squeal that rises with blower speed follows the blower motor. A groan or tick after shutdown is usually metal contracting.

Grinding on a small, higher-pitched scale that happens before the blower ever starts is a different component: the inducer motor at the top of the cabinet.
