The part number is almost never printed on the part you are holding. It lives on the data plate, and on a Ruud condenser that plate is usually on the outside of the cabinet near the service valves, sometimes faded to the point of being unreadable after a decade of coastal weather. Start at the data plate, not the parts catalogue
Pull out your phone and photograph the entire data plate on the outdoor condenser, all of it, including the small print. You need the complete model number and the complete serial number. Ruud, like most manufacturers, runs production changes without changing the marketing name of the unit, so two condensers sold in the same season under the same series can take different control boards, different fan motor mounts, or a different capacitor rating.
The serial number carries the build date, which is what a supply house counter uses to pick the right revision of a shared part. Give them the model alone and you get a best guess.
If the plate is chalked over from salt air, do not scrub it with anything abrasive. A damp cloth and angled light usually bring the stamping back. On some cabinets there is a second label inside the control box door, protected from weather, carrying the same information plus the wiring diagram. That diagram matters more than people expect, because it tells whoever is working on the unit which terminals are line voltage even with the thermostat off.
Also note what is inside the house. The indoor coil and air handler or furnace are half of the system, and a fair number of problems blamed on the Ruud condenser originate at the indoor unit. Photograph that data plate too while you are at it.
What the coastal climate actually does to a Ruud condenser
Salt air is the quiet killer on outdoor units in Tsawwassen, White Rock, Steveston and anywhere within reach of the water on a west wind. It attacks the aluminum fins and the copper-to-aluminum junctions on the outdoor coil, and it works on the cabinet fasteners until the screws shear instead of turning. Units ten kilometres inland in Langley or Maple Ridge age noticeably slower.
The wet season does its own damage. Our units sit idle from roughly October through May, soaking in rain, and the contactor points corrode while nothing is moving. That is why a large share of first-hot-day no-cool calls trace back to a contactor that will not pull in, or pulls in and chatters.
Cottonwood fluff in June and cedar debris in fall pack into the coil face. A blocked coil raises head pressure, which loads the compressor and shortens its life. That is a maintenance failure that later reads as a parts failure.
Mice are the other one. Older Lower Mainland housing stock with open crawlspaces gives rodents a path to the low-voltage wiring and the insulation on the suction line. Chewed thermostat wire produces symptoms that look electronic and expensive but are a twenty-minute repair once someone finds the break.
Capacitors, contactors and the outdoor electrical parts
The run capacitor is the single most replaced part on any residential condenser, Ruud included. It is a cylinder in the control box with a microfarad rating and a voltage rating printed on the top. Symptoms of a weak one: the compressor hums but will not start, the outdoor fan needs a nudge to spin, or the breaker trips on startup. A capacitor that has bulged at the top or leaked oil is finished.
Here is the part people skip. A capacitor stores a charge that can hurt you badly after the power is off, and the correct replacement must match both the microfarad value and the voltage rating for that specific unit, not the one that fits the bracket. Substituting a nearby rating stresses the compressor windings. This is a licensed-tech job, and in BC that is not a formality.
The contactor is the relay that switches line power to the compressor. Pitted or welded contacts, ant nests inside the housing, a coil that has gone open. All common, all cheap parts, all inside a cabinet carrying line voltage even when the thermostat is off, because the disconnect is a separate switch.
The outdoor fan motor and its blade are matched as a set for rotation, shaft size and mount. Guessing at a universal motor here usually ends with airflow moving the wrong direction across the coil.
Compressor, coil and everything on the refrigerant side
Anything sealed is off-limits without a Refrigeration/Ozone Depletion Prevention certification. Opening a refrigerant circuit without that certification is illegal in Canada and venting refrigerant carries real penalties, so this section is here to tell you where the line sits rather than how to cross it.
Compressors rarely fail first. They fail because something else was wrong for a long time: a restricted coil, a low charge from a slow leak, a contactor chattering and short cycling the motor, or a failed capacitor that made it start hard every time. Before quoting a compressor a technician should be able to tell you what killed it, otherwise the replacement inherits the same fate.
Outdoor coils and indoor evaporator coils are model-specific, and a coil replacement is often the point where a system’s remaining life gets discussed honestly. Formicary corrosion produces pinhole leaks in the copper of indoor coils and is common in newer homes with certain indoor air chemistry.
Metering devices, service valves, filter driers and line-set components are all diagnosis-dependent parts. A drier gets replaced any time the circuit is opened, without exception, because it is the only thing protecting the new component from moisture pulled in during the repair.
Refrigerant type matters too. Ruud has shipped several over the years, and the refrigerant a unit was built for is on that same data plate.
The maintenance parts you can genuinely handle yourself
Filters first. The filter is at the indoor unit, not the Ruud condenser, and in most Lower Mainland homes it sits in a slot at the furnace or air handler or behind a return grille in a hallway ceiling. Note the printed dimensions and the airflow arrow. Higher-MERV filters restrict airflow more, and on a system that is already tight on duct capacity a thick pleated filter can cause freeze-ups that look like a refrigerant problem.
Condensate is the other one. The indoor coil drips constantly in summer, and that water goes into a drain pan and out through a small PVC line, often terminating outside or at a laundry standpipe. Slime builds in that line every season. Flushing it before the hot weather starts prevents the overflow that ruins a ceiling. If your system has a condensate pump, the float switch is a wear item.
Outside, you can rinse the condenser coil with a garden hose from the inside out with the power off at the disconnect. No pressure washer. Pressure flattens fins and once they are folded over, airflow is gone.
Keep a clear metre around the cabinet. Cedar hedges, recycling bins and lattice screens choke discharge air. Also clear the top; nothing stacked on the fan grille.

OEM Ruud parts versus aftermarket equivalents
An OEM part carries the manufacturer’s own number and is what the warranty language usually references. Aftermarket equivalents exist for most electrical components and many motors, and for a fifteen-year-old condenser they are often the sensible route, particularly when the OEM version has a long lead time.
The distinction matters most in three places. Control and defrost boards, where firmware and terminal layout differ between revisions and a close-enough board produces intermittent faults nobody can chase. Blower and fan motors, where a universal replacement can be made to work but requires correct rotation, capacitor pairing and mounting, and where ECM motors are effectively not substitutable. And anything the manufacturer specifically ties to a parts warranty, because fitting a non-OEM component can end coverage on that component.
Before you buy anything, check whether the unit is still inside its parts warranty period. That coverage is typically tied to the original registration and to the original owner, with conditions that vary, so read your own registration paperwork or ask Ruud directly rather than assuming. Labour is normally separate from parts coverage.
For sealed-system components, use OEM. The tolerances and the refrigerant compatibility are not worth improvising on.

Older units run into obsolescence. Once a series has been out of production long enough, some parts simply stop being made and the repair path becomes a cross-referenced substitute or nothing at all. A good technician tells you that early rather than after you have waited three weeks.
Counters sell to licensed contractors, not to the public, for most sealed-system and electrical components. Homeowners can buy filters and basic supplies at retail, but the parts that matter come through the trade.
One practical note. Order the part and the diagnosis together. Buying a component online because the symptom matched a video, then paying a technician to discover the actual fault, is the most expensive version of this.
Deciding between a part, a repair, and replacing the system
Age is the first filter, not the only one. A condenser past the middle of its expected service life with a failed sealed-system component sits in a different conversation than a ten-year-old unit with a bad contactor. Nobody should replace a system over a capacitor.
The factors that actually move the decision: whether the failure is in the sealed circuit or outside it, whether the indoor coil is matched and healthy, what refrigerant the system uses and how available it still is, how many separate faults have shown up in the last two seasons, and whether the ductwork would need work regardless. A repair that leaves you with a mismatched coil and a system that still short cycles has not solved anything.
