Strip the marketing away and water heating is arithmetic. You pay to raise a certain volume of water from the temperature it arrives at to the temperature you store or deliver it at, then you pay again for whatever heat escapes before you use it.

Volume comes from habits and fixtures. A household of five with two teenagers, a soaker tub and a laundry cycle every night draws several times what a retired couple in a one-bathroom rancher draws. Nobody’s Rheem unit changes that.

Temperature rise is the gap between incoming city water and your setpoint. In the Lower Mainland that gap swells every winter, which is why hot water is quietly a seasonal cost even though your shower habits do not change.

Conversion efficiency is how much of the energy you buy actually ends up in the water rather than going up the vent or into the room. This is where the gas-versus-electric-versus-heat-pump decision lives.

Standing loss is the slow bleed from a stored tank, plus the heat lost in uninsulated pipe runs and any recirculation line. It runs whether you use hot water or not.

Every cost-saving move you can make is an attack on one of those four. Anything else is noise.

How gas, electric resistance and heat pump Rheem units convert energy differently

A conventional atmospheric-vent gas tank burns fuel under the tank and sends combustion gases up a flue. Some of that heat leaves through the vent by design — the vent has to stay warm enough to draft properly. A condensing or power-vented gas unit recovers more of that heat before it exits, which is why it needs a different vent material and a condensate drain.

An electric resistance unit is different in kind. Elements sit directly in the water, so essentially all the electricity drawn becomes heat in the tank. That sounds like the winner until you compare what a unit of electricity costs against a unit of gas on your own bill, at your own consumption tier.

A heat pump water heater changes the game again. It does not make heat, it moves it — pulling warmth out of the surrounding air and pushing it into the water, using electricity only to run the compressor and fan. That means it can deliver more heat energy than the electrical energy it consumes, which no burner and no element can do.

The trade-off is real: it needs enough surrounding air volume, it blows cool air into whatever room it sits in, it makes noise, and it slows down when the space around it gets cold. A garage in Langley in January is not the same operating environment as a heated basement in Kitsilano.

Why Lower Mainland inlet water temperature quietly moves your cost

Municipal water in Metro Vancouver comes largely from mountain reservoirs, and it arrives cold. Not lukewarm-cold. Genuinely cold, particularly from late fall through early spring, and colder again in homes with long buried service lines running through saturated winter ground.

That matters because your water heater is paid to close a gap. If the same shower needs a bigger temperature rise in January than in August, it costs more in January, even though your behaviour is identical. Households often notice this as a winter bill they cannot explain and assume something has failed.

It also changes how equipment behaves, not just what it costs. A tank recovers more slowly when it is filling with colder water, so the second and third shower of the morning arrive cooler than they did in summer. A tankless unit has to throttle its flow rate down to hit the same output temperature, which is the single most common reason a properly working tankless unit feels weak in winter and fine in July.

A heat pump water heater feels the season from both ends — colder water in, and cooler surrounding air to harvest heat from if it lives in an unheated garage or crawlspace.

None of this is a defect. It is a design input, and it is why sizing decisions made in summer sometimes disappoint in February.

Standby loss on a tank versus cycling losses on a tankless

A storage tank holds hot water around the clock so it is ready when you open a tap. Insulation slows the loss but never stops it, and the burner or element fires periodically just to hold temperature. That is standby loss, and you pay it during every hour you are at work, asleep or away for the weekend.

Tankless units carry no standby loss because there is nothing stored. They also carry a different penalty: every draw has a startup, and short draws — rinsing a cup, washing hands for ten seconds — spend energy heating the exchanger and the pipe without delivering much usable hot water. A home full of tiny draws erodes part of the tankless advantage.

The biggest hidden cost in either setup is a recirculation loop left running continuously. It gives you instant hot water at a distant bathroom, and it does so by keeping a whole loop of pipe hot all day. On an uninsulated loop in an older Vancouver house with a cold crawlspace, that is heat pouring into the dirt.

The fix is usually not ripping the loop out. It is putting it on a timer or an on-demand button so it runs during your actual morning window, and insulating the loop properly. That is one of the cheapest efficiency improvements available on an existing system.

Reading efficiency ratings on a Rheem spec sheet without being misled

Water heaters are rated under a system called Uniform Energy Factor, or UEF. It bundles conversion efficiency and standby loss into one number for a defined usage pattern, and it is the only apples-to-apples figure worth comparing. It is published per model, and it changes across series, capacity and vent configuration within the same brand.

We are not going to print a number here, and you should be sceptical of any contractor or blog that does without naming your exact model. Pull the model number off the rating plate on your unit, then check Rheem’s own spec sheet for that model or look it up in the AHRI Directory. Those two sources are authoritative. A forum post is not.

Second thing to understand: UEF is measured against a draw pattern, and units are assigned a draw-pattern class. Comparing a model rated on one pattern against a model rated on another is not a clean comparison, which is a common way spec sheets get misread.

Third, efficiency ratings say nothing about capacity. A very efficient unit that cannot keep up with your morning will make you unhappy regardless of its rating, and short-cycling or running out is its own kind of waste.

Rebate and incentive programs through CleanBC and FortisBC set their own qualifying thresholds and paperwork. Confirm current requirements directly with the program before you buy — they change.

Setpoint, mixing valves and the scald trade-off

Turning the thermostat down cuts both standby loss and the energy per litre, because you are storing less heat and closing a smaller gap. It is the one adjustment a homeowner can make in five minutes.

It is also the adjustment with a genuine safety floor. Stored water that sits too cool creates conditions where bacteria including Legionella can establish in a tank. That risk is why plumbing practice stores hot water hotter than you would ever want at the tap.

The grown-up solution is a thermostatic mixing valve at the tank outlet. Store hot enough to be safe biologically, then blend down to a safe delivery temperature before the water reaches a fixture. You get the capacity benefit of a hotter store, protection against scalding at the tap, and a bigger effective volume of usable water from the same tank.

If your home has small children, elderly residents or anyone with reduced sensation, a mixing valve is not optional in any sensible design. Ask about it whenever a tank is replaced. It is dramatically cheaper to install during a changeout than as a separate visit later.

One caution: do not chase efficiency by dropping a setpoint so far that the unit can no longer cover your peak draw. You will just run out of hot water and reach for the dial again, and repeated large swings are hard on a tank.

Maintenance drift: the slow way efficiency disappears

A water heater rarely gets less efficient overnight. It drifts, and by the time you notice the bill you have been paying for months.

Sediment is the classic one. Minerals and debris settle on the bottom of a gas tank and sit between the burner and the water as an insulating blanket. The burner runs longer to do the same job, and you hear it — popping, rumbling, kettling noises from the base of the tank. Metro Vancouver water is soft, so this shows as sludge and debris rather than hard scale, but it still accumulates. Periodic flushing is the answer.

The sacrificial anode rod is the part nobody thinks about and the one that determines whether a tank lasts. It corrodes so the steel tank does not. Once it is consumed, the tank starts spending itself. Checking it on a schedule is genuinely the difference between a tank that reaches old age and one that fails early.

On gas units, a dirty burner, blocked air intake or partially obstructed vent degrades combustion and can create a genuine safety problem, not only an efficiency one. That is licensed-technician territory in British Columbia — gas work requires TSBC certification, and there is no homeowner version of it.

Heat pump water heaters add an air filter and an evaporator coil that both need cleaning. Clog them and the unit quietly falls back on its resistance elements, which is the expensive way to make hot water.

When the bill jumps: the order a technician checks things

A sudden increase almost always has a physical cause, and there is a sensible sequence for finding it rather than replacing parts hopefully.

First, rule out a leak. A dripping hot tap, a running toilet fed off a mixing valve, or a slow leak in a buried hot line will draw heated water continuously. We check the water meter with everything shut off; if it creeps, the problem is not the heater.

Second, confirm the setpoint has not been moved. Somebody visiting, somebody chasing a lukewarm shower, a dial knocked while storing boxes against the tank — it happens constantly.

Third, look at usage change. New occupant, new baby, new laundry pattern, a suite tenant, a hot tub topped up from indoors. The equipment is fine; the load changed.

Fourth, on electric tanks, test both elements and thermostats. A failed upper or lower element makes the surviving one run far longer for less delivered hot water, which reads as both a comfort complaint and a cost jump.

Fifth, on heat pump models, verify the unit is actually running in heat pump mode and has not defaulted to elements because of a fault, a filter, a cold room, or a mode setting someone changed.

Sixth, inspect the recirculation setup and pipe insulation. Then, and only then, we look at combustion, sediment and the age of the tank itself.
