A loud bang or boom when the burners light. Not a click, not a whoosh, a percussive thump you feel through the floor. That pattern is generally associated with delayed ignition, where gas accumulates in the burner box for a moment before igniting. Repeated over a winter, it stresses the heat exchanger and the vent connection. Shut the furnace off at the thermostat and the service switch, and book a licensed technician.

A carbon monoxide alarm sounding, with or without any noise from the furnace. Leave the home. Call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside, not from the kitchen. Do not reset the alarm and go back to bed.

Any smell of gas near the appliance, especially paired with a hissing sound. Leave, take everyone with you, and call from outside. Do not flip switches on your way out.

One more that is less dramatic but still serious: a furnace that repeatedly makes noise, shuts down, and restarts itself. That is a safety control doing its job. The correct response is to find out which control is tripping and why. Never jumper, tape, or bypass a limit switch, pressure switch or door interlock to keep the heat running. Those parts exist because combustion appliances fail in ways that hurt people.

Pinpoint the noise by matching it to a stage of the cycle

Before anything else, stand near the furnace through one full cycle with the thermostat calling for heat. You are timing the noise against five distinct stages, and that timing does most of the diagnostic work.

Stage one, the thermostat calls and the inducer draft motor spins up. This is a whirring or whining sound that ramps. Noise here points at the inducer assembly or its mounting.

Stage two, a pressure switch closes with a soft click, then the ignitor energizes. Clicking that repeats endlessly without heat belongs here.

Stage three, the gas valve opens and burners light. Any bang, boom, rumble or roar at this exact instant is a combustion-side issue.

Stage four, roughly thirty to sixty seconds later, the main blower starts. Squeals, grinding, rumbling and vibration that begin precisely when air starts moving are blower or ductwork related.

Stage five, the burners shut off and the blower runs on, then stops. Popping and ticking after shutdown is usually thermal contraction in metal.

Write down which stage. Note whether it happens every cycle or occasionally, and whether it changed recently. Those two facts turn a vague complaint into something a technician can chase directly instead of rediscovering from scratch.

Bang or boom at ignition, and why it is not a rattle problem

This one deserves its own treatment because homeowners often lump it in with general noise.

When a burner lights promptly, the sound is a soft whoosh. When ignition is delayed, gas builds for a fraction of a second longer than it should, then lights all at once. The result is the bang. What causes the delay sits in a small set of categories: dirty or misaligned burners, a fouled or cracked ignitor, weak flame carryover between burner ports, gas pressure that is off specification, or a restricted flue or combustion air path.

None of those are homeowner adjustments. Gas pressure in particular requires a manometer and licensed gas fitting work, which in British Columbia means TSBC certification. Burner cleaning involves removing the burner assembly and reinstalling it correctly, and doing it wrong makes the delay worse.

Ticking, popping and booming that comes from the ducts, not the furnace

Plenty of the noise blamed on a furnace is actually sheet metal moving.

Ductwork expands when hot air enters and contracts when it cools. In older Lower Mainland homes with long unlined trunk lines running through crawlspaces, that produces ticking, popping, and occasionally a startling oil-can boom as a flat panel of metal flexes. The tell is timing: it starts shortly after the blower does, or shortly after it stops, and it comes from a run of duct rather than the cabinet.

The common aggravator is static pressure. A filter that has not been changed since summer, a return grille blocked by a couch, or too many supply registers closed off in unused rooms all raise pressure across the system and make duct panels flex harder. Start there. Change the filter, open the registers, clear the return.

If the noise persists, the fixes are mechanical: adding a cross-break or stiffener to a flat duct face, securing loose hangers, adding a flexible connector at the furnace outlet where none exists, or correcting a genuinely undersized return. Rattles, buzzes and vibration you can often fix yourself

This is the category where a homeowner can genuinely make progress in ten minutes.

With the furnace off and the power switched off, check the access panels. Both doors should sit square and be fully engaged on their tabs and screws. A door that is a few millimetres proud will buzz every time the blower runs, and it can also interfere with the door interlock switch. Tighten the screws you find, and look for missing ones.

Next, check anything resting on or against the cabinet. Paint cans, a stored screen door, a shelf touching the plenum, a dryer vent running alongside. Sympathetic vibration through a contacting object is a surprisingly common cause of a noise that seems to come from inside the unit.

A steady electrical hum that is present whenever the furnace has power, even between cycles, often traces to the transformer or a contactor and is generally not urgent, though it should be mentioned at the next service visit.

What you should not do is open the blower compartment and start poking. Capacitors hold charge, and the blower wheel has enough mass to break fingers if it decides to spin.

Squealing and screeching from the blower compartment

A high-pitched squeal that appears the moment the blower starts, and disappears when it stops, is nearly always the blower assembly.

A heavily loaded wheel, caked with the fine dust that accumulates in a crawlspace-mounted unit running a cheap filter, accelerates bearing wear considerably.

A different squeal, thinner and coming from higher in the cabinet during the pre-purge stage rather than the blower stage, generally points at the inducer motor instead.

Some older motors have oil ports and some do not. Guessing wrong and spraying lubricant into a sealed motor accomplishes nothing except making the eventual replacement messier. Have someone identify the motor type, check its amperage draw against the nameplate, and inspect the wheel for buildup before deciding between cleaning, lubrication and replacement.

Grinding, scraping and knocking, which means metal is touching metal

Squealing is a warning. Grinding is damage happening in real time.

A rhythmic scraping that speeds up and slows down with the blower usually means the blower wheel is contacting the housing. That happens when a motor mount has softened or shifted, when a set screw has loosened and the wheel has crept along the shaft, or when the wheel itself has lost a balance weight and is running out of true. Every additional minute of running deforms the wheel further and loads the bearings.

A deeper knocking or clunking, more like a hammer than a scrape, suggests something is loose in the assembly or a foreign object has found its way into the blower. It happens more often than you would think in homes with open return platforms where a screwdriver, a piece of insulation or a toy has dropped in.

The correct response to either is to shut the furnace down at the service switch and leave it off. Running it does not buy you heat for long, and it converts a motor-and-wheel repair into a larger one.

Do not open the blower compartment to look. Even with the thermostat satisfied, the blower can start on a fan cycle or a limit-driven cool-down, and there is stored charge in the run capacitor. This is a service call, and a straightforward one for a technician with the unit properly isolated.

Clicking, humming and gurgling that never turns into heat, and what to log before calling

Some noises are the furnace failing to do something rather than doing it badly.

Repeated clicking with no burner light generally points at the ignition sequence: a control board trying and failing to prove flame, a cracked ignitor, or a fouled flame sensor. Repeated attempts followed by a shutdown means the board has locked out. Cycling the power once is reasonable. Doing it repeatedly is not, because the lockout is protecting you.

A hum with the inducer running but no progress often means a pressure switch is not closing. On condensing furnaces in this region, the frequent cause is water where it should not be, and that connects directly to the gurgling category. A blocked condensate trap or a drain line that has sagged and pooled will make an audible gurgle and can back water into the pressure switch tubing. Wet coastal winters plus long condensate runs through cold crawlspaces make this a regular local call.

In our wet, cold crawlspaces that is a frequent local call. Left alone, backed-up water can reach the pressure switch tubing and cause nuisance shutdowns, so get it cleared properly.

The blower squeals but the furnace still heats. Can it wait?

It can usually wait days, not months. A squeal from a direct-drive blower typically indicates bearing wear, and bearings only go one direction. Book service rather than ignoring it, and mention how long it has been happening. If the sound changes to grinding or scraping, shut the furnace down immediately, because at that point metal is contacting metal.
