Find the data plate before you look for a part

Every parts conversation starts with the rating plate on the outdoor unit. It’s usually a metal or foil label on the cabinet side, often near the refrigerant service valves or behind the corner panel, and on units that have been outside for fifteen coastal winters it may need a wipe with a damp cloth to become readable. Photograph it in good light rather than transcribing it — one transposed character sends you the wrong component.

What matters most is the full model number and the serial number. The model identifies the equipment family and configuration; the serial narrows it to a production period, which matters because manufacturers revise components mid-run without changing the model. A supplier who has both can look up the correct part, and if it has been superseded they’ll know what replaced it.

Write down the electrical data too — voltage, phase, and the rated load amps and locked-rotor amps for the compressor and fan motor. These are what determine whether a substitute motor or contactor is actually suitable.

Don’t forget the indoor side. If the fault is with the blower, the control board, or the evaporator, the relevant plate is on the furnace or air handler, not the condenser. Contactor contacts pit and weld, insects nest in the contactor and hold it open or closed, and outdoor disconnects corrode in our wet climate.

Motor and start components: the run capacitor serving the compressor and outdoor fan, the fan motor, and the fan blade. Capacitors are the single most-replaced part in residential cooling. Fan motors fail from bearing wear and from water intrusion where the top grille seals have degraded.

Controls and sensing: the low-voltage transformer, thermostat wiring, pressure switches, and on units so equipped, a control board. Low-voltage faults are often rodent damage to thermostat wire in a crawlspace, not a failed component at all.

Sealed system: compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, metering device, filter drier, line set and service valves. Everything in this group means opening the refrigerant circuit.

The first three groups are diagnosable with a meter in minutes. The fourth requires gauges, recovery equipment and certification, and it’s where repair-versus-replace decisions get serious.

OEM, aftermarket and “universal” — when substitution is fine

Not all parts carry the same substitution rules, and treating them alike is how systems get damaged.

Electrical commodity parts — contactors, capacitors, transformers, disconnects — are made by a handful of manufacturers and sold under many labels. A substitute is acceptable when the specifications match exactly: for a capacitor, the microfarad value and voltage rating and configuration; for a contactor, the pole count, coil voltage and current rating; for a transformer, the primary and secondary voltages and VA rating. Matching is not approximating. A capacitor with a different microfarad rating will run the motor outside its design point and shorten its life even though the unit appears to work.

A “universal” condenser fan motor must match horsepower, voltage, speed, rotation direction, shaft diameter and length, mounting pattern, and it needs the correct capacitor paired with it. Rotation direction alone catches people out — a motor spinning the wrong way moves almost no air and the unit overheats and trips on high pressure.

Sealed-system components and control boards should generally be OEM or manufacturer-approved equivalents. Boards in particular carry firmware and staging logic specific to the equipment.

A run capacitor holds a charge after power is removed — sometimes a substantial one — and the correct procedure is to discharge it across a resistor before touching the terminals. Beyond the shock hazard, a failed capacitor is frequently a symptom rather than a cause. Compressors drawing high current because of a refrigerant or airflow problem cook their capacitors. Replace the capacitor, ignore the cause, and you’ll do it again in weeks while the compressor takes the damage.

A proper visit measures the capacitor’s actual microfarad value against its rating, checks compressor and fan motor current draw against the data plate, inspects the contactor at the same time since they fail together often, and looks at charge and airflow before signing off.

Getting the right replacement means matching microfarad values exactly — dual-run capacitors have separate values for compressor and fan — plus voltage rating and physical size for the mounting bracket. That information is printed on the old capacitor’s label, which is worth photographing before anything else, because heat and weather make those labels illegible over time.

Contactors, transformers and the low-voltage side

Contactors take more abuse than any other component in the cabinet. Every call for cooling slams the contacts closed under load, and over thousands of cycles they pit, arc and eventually either weld shut — leaving the unit running with the thermostat off — or fail to make contact at all. Ants and wasps are a real cause of contactor failure in Lower Mainland yards; a nest inside the contactor body will hold the armature open. Replacement requires matching pole count, coil voltage and current rating.

The 24-volt control circuit is where the intermittent, maddening faults live. A transformer that’s failed outright is easy. A thermostat wire chewed by rodents in a crawlspace, or one that’s been rubbing against a joist edge for a decade and finally shorted, presents as random no-cooling that resolves before the technician arrives. Low-voltage wiring buried under a deck or run through a garden bed is another chronic offender.

Fan motors, blades and the water-intrusion problem

An outdoor fan motor that’s gone means the compressor keeps running with no way to reject heat, head pressure climbs, and the system trips out on high pressure or, on units without that protection, damages the compressor.
