Start at the rating plate, not the parts counter

Kill power at the furnace switch and the breaker. Pull the lower door. The label you want is usually on the inside left wall or on the divider panel, and it lists a model number, a serial number, input rating, gas type and electrical draw. Photograph it straight on with the flash. Photograph it again from an angle, because foil labels blow out under flash and the digits you need are often the ones that disappear.

That single photo saves an hour. Model tells the parts distributor which family and cabinet width you have. Serial tells them when it was built, which is what separates one control board revision from another. People try to skip this by describing the furnace as tall and beige with two pipes out the side. While the door is off, photograph the failed component too, including any label printed on it, and note where the wires land. A blower motor carries its own spec tag with horsepower, speeds and rotation. An inducer carries a part number moulded into the housing. Then put the door back on before you go looking for a phone number.

Model and serial both matter because manufacturers revise mid-run

Two furnaces with the same model number, built two years apart, can take different control boards, different pressure switches and different igniter mounting brackets. Manufacturers change suppliers, tighten a tolerance, or supersede a component when the original goes out of production. The serial number is the date stamp that tells the distributor which side of that change you are on.

This matters most with anything electronic. A board that looks identical can have a different plug count or a different terminal layout, and a mismatched board will either not seat in the mounting rails or will run the sequence in a way the rest of the furnace does not expect. Pressure switches are the other frequent trap, because two switches can be physically identical and set to trip at different values. Fit the wrong one and you either get nuisance lockouts or, far worse, a switch that no longer protects you against a blocked vent.

Superseded parts are normal and fine when the distributor confirms the supersession. What is not fine is a close-enough substitution chosen off a photo. Flame sensors do not really fail, they foul. Inducer motors announce themselves. Bearing whine, a rattle at startup, or a motor running slow enough that the pressure switch never makes. Blower motors and their capacitors show up as a furnace that heats then trips on high limit, because airflow has quietly collapsed. The short list you can genuinely handle yourself

Filters. Correct size, correct direction, arrow pointing toward the furnace, changed on a schedule rather than when you remember. In homes with pets or during renovation dust, that is more often than the box suggests. A clogged filter is the most common cause of a furnace that heats briefly then trips out on temperature, and it costs nothing to rule out.

Thermostat batteries, if yours takes them. A weak battery produces intermittent no-heat calls that look electrical and are not. Also fair game: clearing snow, leaves and cedar debris away from the outside vent terminals, keeping the area around the furnace clear of stored boxes, checking that supply and return registers are not blocked by furniture, and confirming the furnace switch on the wall is actually on. That last one is not a joke; it gets bumped during moves and renovations constantly.

You can also pull and inspect the filter rack, look at the condensate drain for standing water, and read the diagnostic light through the sight glass so you can describe the blink pattern to a technician over the phone. Do not interpret the pattern from a website. Read it off the legend printed on your own furnace’s door, because the meaning of a given pattern varies by brand, model and year.

Where the line is: gas, combustion and controls are licensed work

In British Columbia, work on gas appliances is regulated. Technical Safety BC licenses gas fitters, and a permit-and-certification regime exists because combustion appliances hurt people when they are set up wrong. That means the gas valve, burners, manifold, orifices, heat exchanger, venting, pressure switches, rollouts, limits, the control board and the ignition system are not homeowner projects, regardless of what a video shows.

The technical reason is measurement. Replacing an igniter is mechanically easy. Confirming the furnace is safe afterwards is not, because it requires reading manifold pressure with a manometer, verifying inducer draft, checking for spillage at the vent, and confirming combustion is clean. Without those checks you have a furnace that lights, which is not the same as a furnace that is safe.

There is also an insurance and warranty dimension. Unlicensed gas work on your own home can complicate a claim and will generally void manufacturer parts coverage. Check your own policy and your manufacturer paperwork rather than assuming either way.

The safety rule overrides everything above. If you smell gas, or a CO alarm sounds, do not investigate. OEM, aftermarket and the word universal

OEM means the part carries the furnace manufacturer’s number and is the component the engineering was validated with. Aftermarket means a third party builds to the same duty. A universal blower motor has to be configured for rotation, speed tap and the airflow your ductwork actually needs, and if that setup is wrong you get either poor heat delivery or a furnace tripping on high limit. A universal igniter has to sit in exactly the right position relative to the burner flame, and a few millimetres out is the difference between reliable ignition and a furnace that fails on the coldest night.
