What each age band actually means for your money
Think of the answer as three bands, and treat the boundaries as fuzzy.
Early band. The system should be doing what it did when new. Weak cooling here is almost never wear. It is a dirty filter, a blocked return, a plugged condensate path, a refrigerant leak at a joint, or a thermostat setting nobody understands. Fix the cause and expect many more seasons.
Middle band. Wear items start reporting for duty. Run capacitors weaken, contactor points pit and chatter, condenser fan motor bearings dry out, and the outdoor coil is now dirty enough to raise head pressure on hot afternoons. These are ordinary repairs and they are worth doing on a sound system. This is also the point where an annual clean-and-check stops being optional if you want the last band to arrive late.
Late band. The sealed system becomes the risk. Compressor failures, coil leaks and refrigerant availability start driving the conversation, and the cost of a single major repair can approach a meaningful share of a replacement. Nothing forces you to replace a unit that still cools. But you should stop spending large sums on it without first getting a written comparison, so you are choosing rather than reacting on the hottest week of the year.
Salt air, rain and the things that age outdoor units early here

Older residential systems were built for a refrigerant that has since been phased down and out of production in Canada. Systems from the following era use a different refrigerant, and newer equipment is moving again toward lower global-warming-potential blends. The practical consequence is availability. When a refrigerant is out of production, what remains is reclaimed or stockpiled, and topping up a leaking system on an obsolete refrigerant gets harder and less sensible every year.
This matters for repair decisions in a very concrete way. A leak on a current-refrigerant system is usually a repair. The same leak on an obsolete-refrigerant system is often the moment homeowners decide to replace, because you are paying to put scarce refrigerant into a system that has already proven it will not hold it.

Repair or replace: how a technician frames the call
Age is one input. It is not the decision.
The first question is what failed.
