What actually sets service life on the coast
Four things, roughly in order of weight. Install quality comes first and it is not close. Ductless systems are assembled on site at flare joints, and a system that was vacuumed properly, torqued to spec, charged for the actual line-set length, and mounted on a bracket or pad that keeps it out of standing water will outlast a rushed install by years. Moisture and non-condensables left in the lines at commissioning do slow damage that never announces itself until the compressor gives up.
Second is runtime. A ductless head that carries an entire suite year-round accumulates compressor hours far faster than one supplementing a gas furnace in a single room. Inverter compressors modulate rather than cycling hard, which helps, but hours are hours.
Third is environment. Salt-laden air on the North Shore, Tsawwassen, White Rock and the Sunshine Coast attacks aluminum fins and copper tubing. Constant winter damp promotes biofilm on indoor blower wheels and corrosion at electrical connections in unheated crawlspaces.
Fourth is maintenance, which is the only one you control after the fact. Filters, drains, coil condition, and catching a slow flare leak before the compressor runs low on charge.
Notice that brand is not on that list. It matters less than any of the four.
Reading the manufacture date off the outdoor nameplate
Go outside to the condenser. The nameplate is a metal or foil label, usually on the side panel or the back, sometimes tucked behind a plastic corner cover. It carries the model number, the serial number, electrical ratings, refrigerant type and factory charge weight, and on a great many units an explicit manufacture date field printed as a month and year or a year and week.
Start by looking for that explicit date. If it is there, you are done, and it is more reliable than any decoding scheme.
If there is no plain date field, the serial number usually encodes one. Manufacturers embed a year and month or year and week in the leading characters, and the scheme differs by production plant and era. Rather than guessing at a decode, photograph the whole nameplate clearly, both model and serial in the frame, and have your technician or the manufacturer confirm it.
Two practical notes. Photograph the label the first time you find it, because on waterfront installs the printing fades and the adhesive gives up within a decade. And check the indoor head too, on the side of the chassis or behind the front flap, since indoor and outdoor units are occasionally from different production runs or one was replaced separately.
Dating the system when the nameplate is gone
Weathered, painted over, or peeled off entirely. It happens constantly on units older than ten years, especially near salt water. There are three other routes.
The permit and paperwork trail is the best of them. Electrical permits for the outdoor circuit and, in many municipalities, mechanical permits for the install are on record with the city or with Technical Safety BC. If you bought the home, the seller’s disclosure statement, the home inspection report, or the closing documents often name the year. Strata records frequently show approval dates for ductless installs, since most buildings require written approval before anyone hangs a unit on an exterior wall.
Second, the installer’s sticker. Most contractors put a service label inside the indoor head’s flap or on the outdoor cabinet with an install date. Not proof of manufacture date, but usually within a few months of it.
Third, date codes on internal components. Compressors, fan motors and capacitors carry their own dates, and a technician with the cabinet open can read them. The system cannot predate its own compressor. This is the last resort and requires opening panels with live power behind them, so it happens during a service visit, not on a Saturday afternoon by yourself.
Failing all of that, the refrigerant type narrows the era considerably.
What each age band tends to mean
Early years, roughly the first five. Anything that fails here is almost always an install artifact rather than wear: a flare leak that finally opened, a comms wire pinched behind the wall sleeve, a drain that was never sloped correctly. Manufacturer warranty terms vary by model and registration status, so check your own paperwork and the manufacturer’s registration record rather than assuming coverage.
Middle years, roughly six to twelve. This is the stable stretch if the system is maintained. Faults that do appear tend to be sensors, condensate pumps, outdoor fan motors and control relays. Coil corrosion begins showing on waterfront units. Blower wheels reach the point where cleaning makes an obvious difference to airflow and smell.
Twelve to eighteen. Now age is a real factor in every decision. Outdoor coils that have been in salt air for over a decade start leaking at the fin-to-tube joints, which is generally not economically repairable. Inverter boards fail. Parts remain available for most models but lead times stretch.
Eighteen and beyond. Any system still running well here was installed properly and maintained. It can keep going, but you should be planning rather than reacting, because a compressor or board failure at this age usually ends the conversation.
These are patterns, not guarantees. A neglected system can be finished at ten.
Salt air, and why waterfront units age differently
Stand at an outdoor unit in Crescent Beach and one in Abbotsford and the difference is visible. The coastal coil has fins that have gone chalky white and crumble under a fingernail. The valley unit ten years older can still have bright fins.
Chloride in marine air attacks the aluminum fins and the joints where those fins meet copper tubing. It also works on the cabinet fasteners, the base pan, and the electrical terminals inside. What kills the system is not the cosmetic damage but eventual pinhole leaks at the coil, which release refrigerant slowly until the compressor is running undercharged and overheating.
Some models are offered with factory corrosion-resistant coil coatings, and aftermarket coil coatings exist. Whether either applies to your unit is a spec-sheet question for your exact model number, not something to assume.
What helps regardless: rinsing the outdoor coil with clean fresh water on a regular schedule, gently, fins-down, with the power off at the disconnect. This is one of the genuinely useful homeowner tasks near the ocean. Never use a pressure washer, never use an acid coil cleaner without knowing what the coating is, and do not bend fins doing it.
Mounting matters too. A unit on a wall bracket clear of splash and standing water ages better than one sitting on grade in a wet side yard.
The maintenance that actually adds years
Filters, monthly in heavy use. Wash them in lukewarm water, dry them completely, and put them back. Running without filters to improve airflow is not clever, it loads the coil and the blower wheel with everything the filter would have caught.
The blower wheel is the one most people never address, and in this damp climate it is the biggest single restorer of performance on a mid-life indoor head. Biofilm builds in the wheel’s blades, unbalances it, cuts airflow, and produces the musty smell that gets blamed on everything else. It needs a proper cleaning, not a wipe of the visible coil face.
Condensate drains want attention every spring before cooling season. A drain that backs up in July can dump water into a wall for hours before anyone notices.

What does nothing measurable: routinely adding refrigerant. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it needs charge, it has a leak, and topping it up annually just leaks the same money into the atmosphere. Insist on a leak search.
Also worth logging: the date of every filter wash and service visit, kept with the model and serial photo. When you eventually sell the home, a documented service history is a real asset.
Refrigerant type and parts availability as age signals
Look at the nameplate for the refrigerant designation. It tells you roughly what generation of equipment you own and it bears directly on future repair decisions.

Parts availability follows a similar curve. Manufacturers support models for a defined period after production ends, and support windows vary. The practical test when a major component fails on an older unit: can the part be sourced in a reasonable timeframe, and does its cost plus labour make sense against a system that has a defined remaining life? What failed? A sensor, drain pump or fan motor is a repair at almost any age. A compressor or inverter board on a fifteen-year-old system usually is not. A leaking outdoor coil on a salt-exposed unit generally is not.
How old is it, confirmed by nameplate rather than memory? How many previous repairs has it needed in the last two seasons? Is the part available? And is the system doing the job you now need, or has your use of the space changed since it went in?
