How the feeder is supposed to behave

A pressure-reducing valve adds water to the closed loop and shuts off once it reaches a set point, typically around 12 to 15 psi cold for a residential system. When the feeder fails, it either lets pressure creep too high by not closing, or doesn't add enough, leaving the system below the pressure it needs to circulate and heat.
