Homeowners describe AC noise badly, and that is not their fault. “It’s making a weird sound” covers a loose screw and a failing compressor equally well. So the first thing a technician does on a noise call is not open a panel — it is stand there and listen through a full cycle.
Sound carries information about timing. A noise at startup only, a noise that rises with fan speed, a noise that appears after ten minutes of running, a noise at shutdown: each points at a different part of the machine. Get the timing right and you have already cut the possibilities in half.
This page sorts American Standard air conditioner sounds into families, explains what each family generally indicates, and marks the ones where you should stop running the unit rather than wait. Where a noise could mean several things, we say so instead of pretending otherwise.
Diagnose the timing first, then the sound
Before naming the noise, pin down four things. Where does it come from — the outdoor condenser, the furnace or air handler cabinet, or the ductwork and registers? When does it happen — the instant the system calls, a few seconds in, continuously while running, or on shutdown? Does it change with blower speed? And is it new, or has it been slowly getting worse?
Those answers narrow things fast. A noise that appears only in the first two seconds of a call points at starting components and mounting hardware taking up load. A noise that grows steadily as the unit runs points at something heating up and expanding, or at a bearing under load. A noise that follows blower speed lives in the indoor half, not the condenser. A noise on shutdown is often a fan blade or compressor coming to rest against something it should not touch.
Record it on your phone. Genuinely — a ten-second video from a metre away tells a technician more than a paragraph of description, because sound texture matters and words flatten it.
Then check the obvious. Is the condenser sitting level on its pad? Lower Mainland pads settle in wet clay soil and a tilted unit vibrates against its feet. Is anything leaning on the cabinet? Has a fence panel, downspout or recycling bin ended up touching it? Free fixes exist, and they are worth ruling out.
Banging and clanking from the outdoor unit
A hard, metallic bang is the sound that should get your attention fastest, because the harmless causes and the expensive causes sound similar to an untrained ear.
At the harmless end: the fan blade striking a stick, a stone or a coil-guard screw that has backed out. Debris finds its way into condensers constantly here, especially under conifers, and the noise is sharp, irregular, and often stops if you shut the unit down and remove the object. Power off at the disconnect first, always.
At the serious end: a loose or broken component inside the compressor, or a compressor whose internal mounts have failed so the whole assembly slams on startup. That sound is deeper, more of a thud than a clang, tends to repeat every time the compressor starts, and often comes with vibration you can feel through the cabinet. Running a compressor in that state does not stabilize it.
In between sits the most common real cause we find: mounting hardware. Compressor mounting bolts and grommets age. Rubber isolators harden and split after years of damp winters and summer heat, and once they go, the compressor transmits every startup jolt straight into the sheet metal. That produces a bang or clank at start and stop, and nothing while running steadily.
If it bangs hard and repeatedly, stop the system at the thermostat and book service rather than testing how long it lasts.
Rattling and buzzing that comes from hardware, not failure
Rattle is the most common AC noise complaint and the least often serious. It also has the widest list of causes, so it rewards a methodical look.
Start with panels. Condenser cabinets are sheet metal held by screws that back out under years of vibration. A missing or loose screw lets a panel drum against the frame at a specific resonant point, which is why the rattle often appears only at certain moments in the cycle. Walk around the unit with the power off and check every fastener.
Next, the fan grille and coil guard. These take the worst of the weather and their fixings corrode, particularly on installs near the water. A grille that has rusted loose at one corner buzzes against the cabinet whenever the fan runs.
Then debris in the base pan. Leaves, needles and small stones migrate into the bottom of the cabinet and get stirred by airflow.
Electrical buzz is a different animal. A steady electrical buzz from the area of the contactor, particularly with chattering, points at a contactor with worn contacts or a control-voltage problem. That one is not a hardware-tightening fix and it is not homeowner territory — it lives behind an electrical cover.
One more: refrigerant line sets that touch a joist or wall stud transmit compressor vibration into the house structure. The rattle sounds like it is coming from the wall because it is.
A hum with no start, and what it usually means
You hear a low hum from the outdoor unit. The fan is not turning, or it turns and the compressor never joins in, and after a while the hum stops. This is one of the most diagnostically useful noises there is, because it means the unit is getting power and trying.
The classic cause is a failed or weakened run capacitor. The capacitor supplies the phase shift a single-phase motor needs to begin rotating. Without enough capacitance, the motor sits there energized and stalled, humming and drawing heavy locked-rotor current. That current produces real heat fast, which is why you should not leave a humming unit running while you think about it — shut it off at the thermostat.
Second cause: a seized or stiff motor. A condenser fan motor with failed bearings will hum and refuse to turn. A quick test a technician does is nudge the blade with an insulated tool after cutting power and confirming it has stopped; a motor that starts only when spun is telling you exactly what it needs.
Third: the contactor. Pitted contacts can pass enough current to hum but not enough to run.
Fourth, and most serious: a compressor in locked-rotor condition. That is a different conversation about repair versus replacement.
Capacitors hold a charge after power is removed. That is the reason this diagnosis belongs to a licensed technician, not a YouTube video.
Squealing, screeching and grinding
High-pitched noise is almost always rotational, and it comes from one of three places on a residential split system.
Outdoor fan motor bearings. As they dry out and wear, they first squeal on startup, then squeal continuously, then progress to a dry grinding sound. Damp coastal conditions and the constant wet-dry cycling here are hard on outdoor motor bearings. A squeal that appears on cold mornings and fades once the unit warms is an early bearing complaint, and it does not reverse itself.
Indoor blower. Direct-drive blower motors squeal from bearings much the same way. On older belt-driven air handlers, a screech at startup is often the belt slipping on the pulley — worn, glazed, or out of tension. Belt noise typically changes if you vary blower speed; bearing noise usually does not.
Blower wheel contact. If a wheel loosens on the shaft or the housing shifts, the wheel scrapes the housing and produces a rhythmic screech that tracks exactly with fan speed.
Grinding is the one to take seriously. Metal-on-metal grinding means something is contacting something else with force, and continuing to run the unit turns a motor replacement into a motor plus fan plus coil-damage repair. Shut it down.
There is also a screech that comes from an overpressure condition inside the sealed system. That is rare, and it is an immediate shutdown and a call to a technician.
Hissing, bubbling and gurgling
These sounds live on the refrigerant and airflow side, and they need to be separated carefully because two of them are normal.
A brief hiss or gurgle for a few seconds after the system shuts off is usually just refrigerant pressures equalizing through the metering device. Many American Standard systems do this every cycle and always have. If it has been happening since installation and cooling performance is normal, it is not a fault.
A continuous hiss is different. Persistent hissing, especially near the indoor coil or along the line set, can indicate a refrigerant leak. Pair it with weak cooling, longer run times, ice on the suction line or a coil that frosts over, and a leak search is warranted. Refrigerant leaks do not seal themselves, and running the system low starves and overheats the compressor.
Bubbling in the drain line area during operation is usually condensate moving through a partially blocked trap. Biological growth in drain lines is constant in our humidity. That one ends with water where you do not want it if left alone.
A loud, high-volume hiss or a shriek suggests high-pressure refrigerant escaping. Leave the area, shut the system off if you can do so safely from indoors, and call a licensed technician.
Airflow hiss — a steady whistle at a register or return grille — is a duct restriction issue, not a refrigerant one.
Clicking, ticking, and rapid on-off cycling sounds
A single click when the thermostat calls and another when it satisfies is normal relay operation. Everything else in the clicking family deserves a look.
Repeated clicking at startup, where the unit tries and stops and tries again, generally points at a control or starting fault. It can be a failing contactor, a control-board relay, a thermostat wiring issue, or a safety device tripping and resetting. Systems with pressure switches or float switches can produce exactly this pattern when something opens a safety circuit briefly.
Rapid on-off cycling — the compressor starting and stopping every few minutes — is a symptom worth chasing beyond the noise, because it is hard on the equipment. Common contributors include severe airflow restriction, a dirty condenser coil driving pressures up, low charge, an oversized system that satisfies the thermostat too quickly, or a thermostat located over a heat source or in direct sun. In Fraser Valley homes with additions, we sometimes find the thermostat sitting in an area that no longer represents the rest of the house.
Ticking that follows the blower speed is often a piece of debris in the blower wheel or a fan blade brushing something.
An important exception: never respond to repeated cycling by holding a contactor closed or bypassing a safety switch. Those devices exist to stop the equipment before damage occurs, and defeating one converts a service call into a replacement.
Duct noise, strata rules, and when to stop running the unit
Plenty of “AC noise” never touches the air conditioner. Sheet metal ductwork expands and contracts as cold supply air enters, which produces the popping and ticking you hear in the first minutes of a cycle. A large bang from a duct trunk when the blower starts usually means an undersized or restricted return pulling the metal inward — the fix is airflow, not the AC.
Strata and townhouse owners in Metro Vancouver have an extra dimension. Many bylaws and municipal noise provisions set limits on outdoor equipment sound at property lines or during evening hours. If your condenser has become noticeably louder, that is worth resolving early, before a complaint arrives. Sound-reducing measures exist — proper isolation pads, level mounting, correct clearances — but the honest first step is fixing whatever changed. Never enclose a condenser in a sound box that restricts airflow.
Shut the system down and call for service if you hear: metal-on-metal grinding, hard repeated banging at startup, a loud hiss or shriek, a hum with no rotation, or any noise accompanied by a burning smell or a tripping breaker.
If your cooling shares a cabinet with a gas furnace and you ever smell gas or your CO alarm sounds, leave the home, then call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside. Do not investigate first.
