The data plate is a silver or white sticker on the side of your outdoor Amana cabinet, usually below the electrical disconnect. Model number, serial number, refrigerant type, and factory charge all live there. Photograph it before you phone anyone, because a parts conversation without it is guesswork.
Most Amana AC “parts problems” that come through our line turn out to be one of about eight components. Contactor, capacitor, condenser fan motor, control board, pressure switch, TXV or metering device, blower motor on the indoor side, and the coil itself. Knowing which of those it is changes everything about cost and legality.
There’s a second layer people miss. In this climate, a part rarely fails alone. Salt air off Boundary Bay eats contactor points. A plugged condensate line in a damp Burnaby crawlspace floods a control board. Fix the part, ignore the cause, and you’re buying it twice.
Read the data plate before you call anyone
Walk out to the outdoor unit. On the cabinet wall, usually on the side facing the house or under the service valve panel, there’s a rating plate. You want four things off it: full model number including every letter and suffix, full serial number, refrigerant type, and factory charge in ounces or pounds.
The suffix matters more than homeowners expect. Two Amana condensers can look identical from three feet away and take different condenser fan motors because one was built with a different motor supplier mid-production run. The serial number encodes the build date, and that date is what a parts counter uses to resolve which revision applies.
While you’re out there, photograph the wiring diagram too. On most Amana condensers it’s glued inside the electrical access panel door. That diagram tells a technician the control voltage, the capacitor microfarad rating stamped on the schematic, and the fan motor spec — often faster than pulling the parts themselves.
Indoor side, do the same on the air handler or the coil cabinet sitting on top of your furnace. That’s a separate model number with its own parts list, and half the time the failed component is in there rather than outside. Homeowners in older East Vancouver houses often have an Amana condenser married to a furnace of a different brand, which makes the indoor plate essential rather than optional. The eight components that actually fail on a Vancouver Amana condenser
Contactor first. It’s the black relay block that clunks when the system starts. Its silver contact points arc every cycle, and in salt-influenced air near Steveston, White Rock or Tsawwassen they pit and weld far sooner than inland. A welded contactor makes the compressor run when the thermostat is satisfied.
Run capacitor next. It’s the metal cylinder wired to the compressor and fan. It degrades slowly, and the classic symptom is a compressor that hums for a second and trips the breaker, or a fan blade that needs a nudge with a stick to start turning.
Condenser fan motor. When bearings go, you get a grinding or a screech at startup and the head pressure climbs until a safety opens. Third, the fan blade itself, which corrodes and goes out of balance.
Control board on the outdoor unit or the indoor air handler. These die from moisture and from voltage events. Then pressure switches — low-pressure and high-pressure safeties that open on a genuine fault and are often replaced when the real problem is a plugged coil or a refrigerant leak.
Metering device, indoor blower motor, and the evaporator coil round it out. Coils in this region fail from formicary corrosion, the pinhole kind driven by household chemicals and humidity, which is not rare in an airtight, damp Lower Mainland home.
OEM Amana parts versus universal aftermarket: when each is defensible
A universal capacitor with the correct microfarad and voltage rating is an honest substitute. So is a universal contactor with matching pole count, coil voltage and amperage. These are commodity electrical components, and a good technician stocks them.
Control boards are a different animal. Amana boards run proprietary logic — fault codes, staging, communication with a matched indoor unit. An aftermarket board that “fits” may not speak the same language, and you end up with a system that runs but never staged correctly. For boards, buy OEM.
Condenser fan motors sit in the middle. A universal motor with correct horsepower, RPM, rotation, frame and shaft can work well, but the mount, the capacitor pairing and the blade fit all have to be right. Done sloppily you get vibration, and in a strata townhouse with noise bylaws that vibration becomes a complaint letter.
Compressors and coils: OEM, always, and only if the rest of the system justifies the work. If your warranty is still live, aftermarket parts on a covered component can complicate a claim — check your own registration and warranty document rather than assuming.
One more consideration specific to now: refrigerant type. If your Amana uses an older refrigerant that’s being phased down, coil and compressor availability tightens over time. That changes the repair-versus-replace math and it’s worth asking about before ordering anything expensive.
What you can legally and safely change yourself
Filters. Change them, and in this region change them more often than the box says. Cedar pollen in spring and wildfire smoke in late summer load a filter fast. A choked filter causes freeze-ups that get misdiagnosed as refrigerant problems.
Thermostat batteries and thermostat swaps on simple 24-volt low-voltage systems are within reach for most people, provided you photograph the existing wiring first and the system isn’t a communicating setup.
Condenser coil rinsing is homeowner work. Power off at the disconnect, rinse from the inside out with a garden hose, gentle pressure, no pressure washer. Near the water, do this twice a season to flush salt off the fins.
Clearing the area around the outdoor unit, straightening minor fin damage with a fin comb, and keeping the condensate drain flowing at the indoor coil are all fair game.
Everything else is not. Under BC electrical and gas regulation, and under federal refrigerant handling rules, opening the sealed refrigerant system, brazing, recovering refrigerant, or working inside the line-voltage compartment requires certification. Capacitors hold a charge after power is removed and have genuinely injured people. If your Amana is paired with a gas furnace and you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, get everyone out of the house and call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside — do not troubleshoot from indoors, and never bypass a safety lockout.
Sourcing: distributor counters, warranty channels, and the online trap
Amana parts move through authorized HVAC distribution, and most branches sell to licensed contractors rather than the public. That’s not gatekeeping for its own sake — it’s how warranty traceability and correct revision matching work.
If your unit is inside its parts warranty, the part is claimed through that channel using the serial number and the original registration. Labour is usually a separate matter from the part itself. Read your own warranty certificate; don’t take anyone’s word for what’s covered, including ours.
Online marketplaces are where things go wrong. We see three failure patterns repeatedly: a board that’s the right shape but a superseded revision, a motor sold as a match that has the wrong rotation, and a “genuine” part that’s a grey-market copy with no warranty backing. A part bought online and installed by an uncertified person can also void what coverage remained.
Lead time is real. Common electrical parts are typically same-week from Lower Mainland distribution. Boards, coils and compressors for older Amana models can take longer, especially in a July heat stretch when everyone in the region needs the same components.

Why the same part keeps failing, and what a tech checks upstream
A second contactor in eighteen months is not a bad contactor. It’s a symptom. High amp draw from a failing compressor, low voltage from an undersized or corroded disconnect, or an ant infestation inside the housing — yes, that’s common — all burn contacts prematurely.
Repeat capacitor failures point at heat. A condenser crammed against a fence, buried behind a cedar hedge, or sitting under a deck in a tight Vancouver side-yard runs hot, and heat kills capacitors. Clearance matters more than aesthetics.
Repeat fan motor failures usually mean the blade is out of balance or the coil is filthy and the motor is working against restricted airflow every hour it runs.
Repeat control board failures almost always trace back to water. Rain intrusion through a damaged panel gasket, condensate overflowing an indoor drain pan, or a plugged trap in a crawlspace where nobody looks. This is the single most common cause we find in older Fraser Valley homes.
So the diagnostic order is: confirm the failed part, then measure amp draw, incoming voltage under load, superheat and subcooling, static pressure across the indoor coil, and inspect for water intrusion. That sequence exists because each step rules out a cause of the next failure. A tech who swaps the part and leaves without those readings has sold you a part, not a repair.
When the part isn’t worth buying
There’s a point where a parts conversation should become a system conversation, and an honest technician will say so before you spend.
Compressor failure on a unit past the middle of its service life is the clearest case. The compressor is the single most expensive component, and replacing it in an aged system leaves you with a new heart in an old body — same coil, same metering device, same contamination that may have killed it.
A leaking evaporator coil is the second case. Coil replacement is significant labour, and if the refrigerant in your system is one being phased down, you’re investing in a platform with a shrinking supply chain.
Repeated failures across unrelated components is the third. When the board, the motor and the coil have each needed attention within a couple of years, the system is telling you something.
And sometimes the honest answer is that the original install was wrong — oversized equipment short-cycling itself to death, or a mismatched indoor and outdoor pairing that never operated within design range.

Getting the part right the first time: what to have ready when you call
Have the outdoor model and serial photographed. Have the indoor unit’s plate photographed too, whether it’s an air handler or a coil sitting on a furnace. Those two images answer most of what a parts desk needs.
Describe the behaviour, not your diagnosis. “It hums then the breaker trips” is more useful than “I think it’s the capacitor.” Note when it started, whether it’s intermittent, whether it correlates with hot afternoons, and whether anything changed — a power outage, a renovation, a new thermostat.
Check the obvious before booking. Breaker on, outdoor disconnect pulled or not, thermostat set to cool with setpoint below room temperature, filter not collapsed, outdoor unit not iced over. We’ve driven to homes where a tripped GFCI on a condensate pump was the whole story.

Those tests require line-voltage work and proper instruments. Don’t open the electrical compartment yourself; capacitors hold a dangerous charge even after power is off.
Does the salt air in White Rock or Tsawwassen really affect my Amana condenser?
Yes, noticeably. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion on aluminum fins, copper tubing, cabinet fasteners and contactor contact points. Units within a few blocks of open water typically show fin degradation and electrical pitting years earlier than identical equipment inland. Rinsing the coil with fresh water twice a season helps a great deal, and coastal-duty coil coatings are worth asking about when you eventually replace the unit.
My Amana AC is still under warranty. Does that cover the labour too?
