Listen properly before you diagnose anything

Stand outside with the system running and give it three full minutes. Most homeowners describe a noise from memory, through a closed window, and that description sends the diagnosis in the wrong direction. What a technician wants to know is narrower: is the sound constant or intermittent, does it happen at startup only, does it change pitch as the fan speeds up, and does it come from the outdoor unit or the indoor air handler?

Put your hand flat on the outdoor cabinet, away from the top grille. A vibration you can feel in the sheet metal is a different problem from one you only hear. Then walk to the indoor unit and listen there. People routinely blame the outdoor unit for a blower-wheel noise travelling through the ductwork.

This is the category that earns a service call rather than a screwdriver. A sharp bang, a repeated metallic knock, or a clank that lines up with compressor start generally means one of three things: hardware has come loose inside the cabinet, refrigerant line set is striking the cabinet or the house wall, or something inside the compressor itself has failed mechanically.

Line-set slap is the least serious and reasonably common in older Vancouver housing stock, where the piping was strapped to a joist decades ago and the strapping has aged out. Every time the compressor starts, the pressure surge moves the line and it hits framing. You often hear it inside the house, near the wall the piping runs through, more than outside.
