Listen to the sequence, not just the sound
Timing beats tone. Before you try to name a noise, find out where it lands in the heating cycle, because the same clunk means completely different things at second three versus second ninety.
Stand near the furnace and turn the thermostat up. You should hear a small motor spin up first — that is the inducer, pulling combustion air and proving draft. A few seconds later the igniter energizes silently, then the gas valve clicks and burners light with a soft whoosh. Roughly thirty to sixty seconds after that, the main blower ramps up and air starts moving through the ducts.
Now map your noise onto that. A bang before the blower starts is combustion-side. A bang the moment the blower kicks in is almost always airflow or ductwork. A rattle that only appears at full blower speed is a panel or a loose sheet-metal joint vibrating in sympathy. A squeal that rises and falls with blower speed is rotating.
Write down what you hear with rough seconds. Does it happen every cycle or one in five? Only on the first call of a cold Coquitlam morning, or all day? Cold-start-only noises point to thermal expansion and moisture; every-cycle noises point to a component. That single note saves real diagnostic time when we arrive, and it stops parts being swapped on guesswork.
Banging on startup: the one to take seriously
A single hard bang or a rolling whump right as the burners light is the noise we least like to hear described over the phone.
That pattern is generally consistent with delayed ignition — gas entering the burner area for slightly too long before it finds flame, so a larger-than-normal pocket lights all at once. The cause sits somewhere in the ignition chain: a weak or contaminated igniter, dirty or misaligned burners, a partially restricted gas supply, a flame sensor that is not proving cleanly, or a burner cross-lighting problem where flame travels slowly from one port to the next. On older Lower Mainland furnaces we also see rust flakes and spider webbing inside burner ports, which does the same thing.
Why it matters more than the noise suggests: repeated ignition pressure pulses stress the heat exchanger, and a cracked heat exchanger is a combustion-safety issue, not a comfort one. This is not a homeowner adjustment. Burner and gas-train work in BC requires TSBC gas certification, full stop.
A very different bang — a hollow metallic pop from the ductwork a second or two after the blower starts or stops — is usually oil-canning: flat sheet metal flexing under pressure change. Annoying, not dangerous, and often fixable with a cross-brake or a properly sized return.

Rattling and buzzing: loose, dirty, or resonating
Rattle is the most common call and the least alarming, but it still deserves a proper source hunt rather than a screwdriver-and-hope approach.
Start with the cheap causes. Cabinet panels and the blower door are the usual suspects — screws back out over years of vibration, and a door that is not seated properly will chatter at one specific blower speed and go silent at others. Filter racks with a filter that is a half-inch undersized will buzz the same way. So will a return grille whose screws have loosened, or a piece of duct resting against a floor joist or a copper line.
Then the mechanical causes. Debris drawn into the blower wheel — a chunk of old filter media, a bit of insulation, a screw — makes an intermittent tick or rattle that changes with speed. Accumulated dust on one side of the blower wheel throws it out of balance, producing a rougher, lower rattle that gets worse over a season. On the combustion side, a failing inducer wheel can rattle at startup only.
A buzz that is electrical rather than mechanical sounds different: steady, tonal, no relationship to airflow. That usually means a contactor, relay, or transformer under load, and it belongs to a technician with a meter.
Safe for you: replacing the filter, tightening visible exterior panel screws with the power off, checking the return grille. Not for you: opening the burner compartment.
Humming without heat: electrical components under load
A hum that continues while nothing else happens is the furnace telling you something is energized but stuck.
The classic version: thermostat calls for heat, you hear a low sixty-cycle hum from the blower compartment, and no air moves. That pattern generally points to a motor that is receiving power but cannot start turning — a failed run capacitor, seized bearings, or a locked rotor. Leaving it humming is not harmless. A motor drawing locked-rotor current heats fast, and you can convert a capacitor replacement into a motor replacement in an afternoon. Shut the system off at the thermostat and the furnace switch and stop the cycling.
A quieter hum from the control area with normal operation otherwise is often the transformer, and a transformer that hums louder than it used to sometimes indicates a shorted low-voltage circuit somewhere in the thermostat wiring — common in older Vancouver homes where a wire has been nicked behind a baseboard or a stat was swapped by a previous owner.
ECM and variable-speed blowers hum differently by design. A soft tone during ramp-up is normal for them, and people who move from an old single-stage unit often report it as a fault when it is not.
Capacitor and motor work involves stored charge and line voltage. Testing a capacitor without discharging it is how people get hurt. Leave it.
Squealing and screeching: bearings, belts, and blower wheels
High-pitched noise is rotational until proven otherwise, and the useful test is whether the pitch tracks with blower speed.
On belt-drive furnaces — still out there in older Fraser Valley houses and some converted systems — a squeal at startup that settles after a minute is usually a slipping or glazed belt, sometimes a misaligned pulley. On the direct-drive units that make up most of what we service, a persistent squeal or a dry metallic screech generally means motor bearings are failing. Sleeve bearings dry out; sealed bearings pit. Either way the noise gets worse, not better, and the motor is on a clock once it starts.
There is a third source people miss: the inducer motor. Its squeal is thinner and only present during the pre-purge and burn, disappearing when the main blower masks it. If your noise stops when the house air starts moving, listen again at the very start of the next cycle.
Damp coastal winters do not help. Furnaces in unheated Lower Mainland crawlspaces sit in high humidity for months, and moisture accelerates bearing corrosion in a way it does not in a dry-climate basement.
One thing not to do: spraying penetrating oil into a motor housing. It washes out what lubricant remains and buys a few quiet weeks at the cost of the motor. Have the bearings assessed properly.
Booming, rumbling, and whistling from the ductwork
Plenty of “furnace noise” is not the furnace. It is the duct system reacting to pressure the furnace creates.
Whistling almost always means air squeezing through a restriction. Check the filter first — a clogged filter, or one with too high a MERV rating for the system’s static pressure capacity, will whistle at the rack. Then look at closed or blocked supply registers, furniture over a floor vent, and undersized returns. A house with one central return and every bedroom door closed at night will whistle under the doors and starve the blower at the same time.
Rumbling that builds and fades is usually flexible duct sagging or a takeoff collar that has partly separated. In Vancouver homes with finished basements added later, we frequently find ducts crushed by framing or a run that was pinched to clear a beam.
A deep boom on shutdown is thermal — metal contracting as it cools. Consistent, harmless, and worth mentioning only so nobody replaces a good part chasing it.

What is safe for you to check, and what genuinely is not
There is a real line here, and in British Columbia part of it is legal, not just cautious.
Safe for a homeowner, with the furnace switched off at the service disconnect: replace the air filter with the correct size and a rating your system can handle; confirm the blower door is fully seated and latched; tighten obviously loose exterior cabinet screws; check that supply registers and return grilles are open, unblocked, and screwed down; clear stored items away from the cabinet; note whether the noise is cold-start-only or every cycle; check that the condensate line on a high-efficiency unit is not backed up.
Not a homeowner job, ever: opening the burner compartment, adjusting or cleaning burners, touching the gas valve, manifold, or any gas connection, testing or replacing capacitors, bypassing a pressure switch, limit switch, or rollout switch, or removing a flame sensor. Gas work in BC requires TSBC certification for a reason, and safety switches exist because someone was hurt before they were mandated.
And the absolute rule: never bypass a lockout. If the furnace has shut itself down and refuses to restart, it has decided that running is worse than not running. Jumpering a switch to get heat back overnight removes the only protection standing between a fault and your family.
