Find the data plate first — nothing else works without it

On a Rheem outdoor condensing unit, the data plate is a metal or foil label on the cabinet, usually on the side near the service valves or beside the electrical access panel. It carries the model number, the serial number, electrical ratings, factory refrigerant charge and refrigerant type.

Photograph the whole label. Not a transcription — a photo. Model numbers are long, mix letters and digits that look alike, and a single wrong character sends you to a different product family.

Do the same for your indoor equipment. The evaporator coil has its own model number, and if your indoor unit is a gas furnace or air handler, its label matters too. Many “AC problems” are actually indoor-side problems, and the parts live in the indoor cabinet.

Rheem serial numbers encode a manufacturing date. You don’t need to decode it yourself — a distributor counter or technician can, and that date determines warranty status and which revision of a component your unit shipped with. Mid-production changes are common, which is exactly why the date matters.

One more habit worth adopting: before removing any failed component, photograph its wiring in place, and photograph the part’s own label. The rating printed on a capacitor or the coil voltage on a contactor is the specification you must match. Colour-coded wires get swapped by previous service calls more often than you’d hope.

OEM, aftermarket and universal — what the difference actually means

Three categories of parts exist, and the distinction is practical, not marketing.

OEM parts are the manufacturer’s own, carrying a Rheem part number, sold through authorized distribution. If your unit is inside its parts warranty, the claim generally requires an OEM part supplied through that channel. Substituting an aftermarket component can end the coverage on the rest of the system.

Aftermarket equivalents are made by third parties to match form, fit and function. For simple electrical components with clearly printed specifications, a quality aftermarket part from a reputable supply house is often perfectly serviceable. Quality varies enormously, though, and the cheap end of the market is genuinely cheap.

“Universal” parts — most commonly condenser fan motors and control components — need real judgment. A universal fan motor has to match horsepower, speed, rotation direction, voltage, frame and shaft dimensions, and mounting pattern, and it usually needs its own matched capacitor. Get one of those wrong and you get a motor that runs backwards, overheats, or moves too little air, which quietly raises head pressure and shortens compressor life.

The outdoor-unit components that actually fail

The run capacitor is the most common failure by a wide margin. It’s an energy-storage component that degrades with heat and age. Symptoms include a compressor that hums but won’t start, an outdoor fan that won’t spin until nudged, or a unit that trips its breaker on start. Capacitors store a dangerous charge even with power off and must be discharged safely before handling.

The contactor is the heavy relay that switches power to the compressor and fan. Its contacts pit and burn over years of switching. Classic symptoms: chattering, a unit that won’t start, or one that won’t stop when the thermostat is satisfied. Insects nesting on the contact face are surprisingly common in our climate.

Condenser fan motors fail from bearing wear, moisture, and running while restricted. A screeching or grinding outdoor unit is usually this.

Control boards and low-voltage transformers fail from power surges and moisture intrusion.

Service valves, Schrader cores and the line set are refrigerant-circuit components — leaks here are common on older installs, especially where a line set passes through a wall or sits in a wet crawlspace.

Compressors fail last and cost most, usually as a consequence of one of the problems above going unaddressed.

Indoor-side parts homeowners blame on the outdoor unit

When cooling is weak, people look outside. Often the fault is inside.

The evaporator coil sits in the plenum above your furnace or inside the air handler. It leaks, it fouls, and it ices. A coil leak presents exactly like a “the AC stopped cooling” complaint, and no part on the outdoor unit will fix it. Coil replacement is a sealed-system job.

The metering device — a fixed orifice or a thermostatic or electronic expansion valve depending on your model — controls refrigerant flow into the coil. When it sticks or clogs, you get poor cooling with normal-looking equipment behaviour.

The indoor blower motor and its capacitor or control module determine whether any air moves at all. On gas furnaces with a variable-speed blower, the motor module is a common and expensive failure.

The condensate system — drain pan, trap, primary line, secondary float switch — causes more mid-summer no-cool calls than most people expect. A plugged trap trips the float switch, the safety shuts the system down, and everything looks fine from outside. Flushing a drain line is a reasonable homeowner task.

The thermostat and its low-voltage wiring round it out. A corroded splice in a crawlspace or a failed thermostat can mimic an equipment fault convincingly.

Warranty: registration, coverage limits, and what “free part” leaves out

Rheem cooling equipment carries a manufacturer’s parts warranty, and the term typically depends on whether the unit was registered within a set window after installation. If nobody registered yours, coverage may be shorter than you assume. Check your own documentation, or have a technician look the serial up through distribution — don’t rely on a general statement from any website, including this one.

What a parts warranty covers is the part. It generally does not cover the labour to diagnose and install it, refrigerant, or shipping. So a warrantied compressor still produces a real invoice — often a substantial one, because the recovery, replacement, evacuation and recharge is a full day’s skilled work.

Coverage also depends on conditions being met: professional installation, proper maintenance, and use of the correct parts. Repairs made with non-approved components, or a system found to have been run with an obvious airflow or charge fault, can be declined.

If your unit came with the home, dig for the original installation paperwork. Serial-based lookup is the fallback.

You can change the air filter, and should, on a schedule that matches your filter’s depth and your household. You can clear the condensate drain line and check the float switch is dry. You can clear leaves, cottonwood and debris from around the outdoor cabinet and gently rinse the coil from outside in with the power off at the disconnect. You can replace thermostat batteries, and confirm the disconnect and breaker are on before calling anyone.

Stop there.

Do not open the electrical compartment of the condenser. Line voltage is present, and the run capacitor holds a dangerous charge after the power is off. Do not replace contactors, capacitors, motors or boards unless you are qualified — this is the most-injured category of DIY HVAC work.

Do not touch the refrigerant circuit. Recovery and charging require certification under Canadian environmental rules, venting is not permitted, and brazing on a system carries fire and pressure risk.

Do not work on gas-fired indoor equipment. Gas work in British Columbia requires a TSBC-certified gas fitter. If you ever smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, get everyone out of the house first, then call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside.

And never bypass a safety lockout, jumper a float switch, or defeat a limit.

Older equipment brings a different problem: supersession and obsolescence. Manufacturers revise parts, and eventually stop producing them. Once a component is unavailable, options narrow to a qualified aftermarket equivalent, a compatible superseded part, or replacing a larger assembly.

Refrigerant type matters here too. Systems using refrigerants that have been phased down face rising cost and shrinking supply, which changes the arithmetic on any repair that involves opening the sealed system.

Options are a qualified aftermarket equivalent, a superseded part number the manufacturer now supplies in its place, or replacing a larger assembly. Which makes sense depends on whether the failure is in the sealed system, the unit’s refrigerant type and its supply outlook, and whether the original sizing and ductwork were done properly. Get that assessment before spending on a hard-to-source component.
