Locate the noise before you name it

Do this first, because it halves the possibilities. Stand outside beside the condenser with the system running and listen. Then go to the furnace or air handler indoors and listen there. Then stand in a room with a supply register open and listen a third time. Most people say the AC is loud when the actual source is the indoor blower or the duct system.

Next, separate the fan from the compressor. Turn the thermostat to fan-only. If the noise persists with the compressor off, it is the indoor blower or the ductwork. If it disappears and only returns when cooling is called, it is the outdoor unit or something responding to the compressor running.

Then note the timing. Only at startup points toward starting components, mounts, and duct expansion. Only at shutdown points toward refrigerant equalizing or metal contracting. Constant throughout the cycle points toward bearings, fan balance or a rubbing line.

Finally, record it on your phone from a safe distance. A ten-second clip taken beside the outdoor unit and another taken at the furnace saves an enormous amount of guessing, especially with intermittent noises that never happen while the technician is standing there.

With those four observations, a technician can usually tell you over the phone whether it is safe to keep running or whether to shut it down now.

Banging and clanking from the outdoor unit

A hard, metallic bang from inside the compressor housing is the sound you take seriously. It generally points to internal mechanical trouble: worn compressor mounts letting the compressor shift on its base, or damage inside the compressor itself. Either way, running it longer does not help. Shut the system off at the thermostat, then at the outdoor disconnect, and have it diagnosed.

A single bang or thump right at startup, without repeating, is a different animal. Compressor isolation grommets harden and crack after years in our wet, cold-then-hot cycling, and once they are gone the compressor lurches against the base plate on every start. That is a real repair, but it is a repair rather than a condemnation.

Clanking that follows the fan rather than the compressor usually means something is contacting the fan blade. Twigs, a fallen fastener, a piece of insulation, or a bent blade from something heavy landing on the top grille. In older Fraser Valley properties with big trees, debris in the fan is common in autumn.

A rhythmic clank that speeds up and slows down with the fan is almost always blade related. A dull, low bang that happens once per cycle is almost always compressor related. That distinction alone tells you whether you are looking at a cleanout or a serious diagnosis. Never reach into the cabinet with power connected.

Rattling, buzzing and vibration

The cheapest noise on this list, and also the most common. Condenser cabinets are sheet metal held together with self-tapping screws that back out under years of vibration. A loose panel resonates like a drum head at exactly the compressor’s running frequency. Fasteners along the corner posts and the top grille are the usual suspects, and tightening them with the power off is genuinely a homeowner job.

An electrical buzz is different. A contactor that chatters instead of pulling in cleanly makes a rapid, angry buzzing and it often comes with lights dimming briefly. That can be a failing contactor, a weak control transformer, or low voltage on the line. It is not a homeowner repair, and running with a chattering contactor arcs the contacts and eventually welds them.

Indoors, buzzing at the furnace or air handler frequently traces to a blower wheel out of balance from accumulated dust, or a motor mount that has aged out.

The sneaky one is the refrigerant line set. Where the copper passes through framing, a missing grommet lets the line touch a joist, and the whole floor structure becomes a soundboard. You hear it in an upstairs bedroom and swear something is wrong with the machine outside. Isolating the line with proper hangers and grommets fixes it entirely.

A hum that never becomes a start

This one has a deadline. When you hear the outdoor unit hum, strain, and then go quiet without the fan spinning up or the compressor settling into its normal running note, the compressor is attempting to start and failing. Every failed attempt sends locked-rotor current through the windings and generates heat that the compressor cannot shed.

Do not keep cycling the thermostat to try again. Each retry is more damage. Turn the system off at the thermostat and leave it off.

The common causes, roughly in the order a technician checks them: a run capacitor that has drifted well below its rated microfarads, a contactor with pitted or partially welded contacts, low supply voltage, a failed start component, or a compressor that has genuinely seized. The capacitor is the most frequent and the least dramatic, but you cannot tell from outside which one it is, and capacitors hold a charge after the power is off. That makes them a technician’s job.

A related sound: a steady hum with the fan spinning but no cooling at all. That often points to the compressor not running while the fan contactor is still pulled in. Same instruction, less urgency.

Squealing, screeching and grinding

High-pitched squealing usually comes from a motor bearing, and in most modern residential systems that means the indoor blower motor or the condenser fan motor. Bearings dry out, the shaft runs hot, and the noise starts intermittent before becoming constant. Caught early, it is a motor replacement. Ignored, a seized blower motor stops airflow across the indoor coil, which ices the coil and floods refrigerant back toward the compressor.

Older air handlers with belt-driven blowers make a different squeal, one that appears at startup and settles once the belt grabs. That is a belt tension or wear issue and it is straightforward.

Grinding is worse than squealing. A dry, gritty grinding from the outdoor unit means a fan motor bearing has failed outright or the blade is contacting the shroud. Shut it down; a blade that breaks free at speed does real damage inside the cabinet.

There is one squeal that is an emergency of a different kind. A loud, sustained, high-pressure hiss or shriek from the outdoor unit that appears suddenly can indicate a refrigerant system under abnormal pressure. Get away from the unit, cut power at the disconnect if you can do it safely from a distance, and call for service. Do not attempt to inspect a pressurized system yourself.

Hissing, bubbling and gurgling

A soft hiss for a few seconds right after the system shuts off is normal. That is refrigerant pressure equalizing across the metering device, and it happens on healthy systems.

A continuous hiss while the system runs is not normal. It generally points to refrigerant escaping, most often at a service valve, a brazed joint, a flare fitting, or a spot where the line set has rubbed against framing or a strap for years. Refrigerant leaks are not a top-up situation; the charge left, which means there is a hole, and adding more without repairing it just funds a slow release. Only a licensed technician may handle refrigerant.

Bubbling or gurgling has two very different sources. In the refrigerant circuit it can indicate low charge or a restriction, because you are hearing vapour where liquid should be. At the indoor coil, gurgling is far more often condensate: water backing up in a trap or a drain line that has partially plugged with biofilm, which is extremely common in our humid summers.

That second one deserves attention even though it sounds harmless. A blocked condensate drain in a horizontal attic air handler or a closet unit puts water into ceilings and walls. If you hear gurgling at the indoor unit and see any staining nearby, treat it as a water problem and get it cleared.

Indoor noise: booming ducts, short cycling and starved returns

A metallic boom when the system starts or stops, like someone tapping a large sheet of steel, is duct oil-canning. Static pressure changes suddenly, and a flat, unsupported section of ductwork flexes. It is common in older Lower Mainland homes where cooling was added to a heating-only duct system that was never sized for the higher airflow that cooling wants. Cross-breaking the panel, adding support, or fitting a flexible connector at the air handler addresses it.

A whistling or roaring at the return grille means the system is trying to pull more air than the return path will give it. Undersized returns, a filter far too restrictive for the fan, or a closed door isolating a return. That is not only noisy; low airflow across the indoor coil drops coil temperature toward icing.

Repeated start-stop-start cycling, each with its own noise, points at short cycling. Oversized equipment satisfies the thermostat too quickly and restarts minutes later. Beyond the noise, every start is the hardest moment in the compressor’s life, so short cycling is a lifespan problem wearing a noise costume.

Register whistling at one specific room usually means a damper closed too far or a supply run too small. Balance it, rather than living with it, because closing registers elsewhere to compensate makes the pressure problem worse.

Strata rules, neighbours, and knowing when to stop and call

Outdoor unit noise is a live issue in Metro Vancouver townhome and low-rise strata communities, and many bylaws set limits on sound at the property line or restrict operating hours. If a neighbour has complained, the first question is whether the unit has actually gotten louder or whether the installation location was always marginal. A unit that has developed a new sound is a service issue. A unit that was always audible in a bedroom next door is a placement and isolation issue, and it is usually solved with proper vibration pads, a level base, correct clearances, and sometimes a relocation with strata approval.

What is reasonable for you to do yourself: tighten loose exterior panel screws with the power off, clear leaves and debris from around the cabinet, change the filter, confirm returns are not blocked, and record the sound.
