If the noise is only outside, you are looking at the condenser fan, the compressor, the cabinet panels or the refrigerant lines. Squealing, screeching and grinding: bearings and the shutdown rule

These three sit on a severity ladder, and where a noise lands on it decides whether you keep running the system.

A squeal that appears at startup and fades is often a bearing that is dry but not yet damaged, or on older indoor blowers with belt drive, a belt slipping on its pulley. Modern residential air handlers are usually direct-drive, so a persistent indoor squeal more often means the blower motor bearings are going.

A continuous high screech from the outdoor unit while it runs is worse. Metal-on-metal contact somewhere, either fan motor bearings that have failed outright or a fan blade contacting the guard because a mount has shifted.

Grinding is the end of the ladder. Grinding means material is being removed. That is the noise where you turn the system off at the thermostat and at the outdoor disconnect and stop running it until a technician has been in the cabinet, because a fan blade that lets go inside a running condenser can destroy the coil beside it.

Add one more shutdown trigger regardless of noise type: a burning or hot-electrical smell, or visible scorching around the control box. Kill the power and call. If the same panel also feeds gas-fired heating equipment and you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside — do not go back in to investigate.

Hissing, bubbling and gurgling: refrigerant and drainage sounds

These are quieter noises and homeowners often ignore them for a season, which is a mistake because they tend to be early warnings rather than failures.

A soft hiss right after the system shuts off, lasting under a minute, is generally just refrigerant pressures equalizing through the metering device. Normal on many systems.

A hiss that continues while the unit runs, or one you can localize to a specific spot on the line set or coil, is a different matter.
