A furnace that has been quiet for years does not start making noise for no reason. Something loosened, wore, restricted or shifted. The sound is the symptom, and the timing of it is the actual clue.
Before you try to identify anything, go stand next to the unit through a full cycle. Thermostat calls for heat. The inducer spins up. The igniter glows. Gas lights. Then the blower comes on maybe thirty to sixty seconds later, runs, and shuts down after the burners cut out. Note exactly which of those steps the noise lands on.
That matters because a noise at ignition and a noise when the blower starts are entirely different problems with entirely different urgency. One of them means stop using the furnace. The other might mean a screw needs tightening. This page walks the common categories, tells you which checks are genuinely yours, and is honest about which are not.
Time the noise to the cycle first
Get a chair, sit near the furnace, and turn the thermostat up. You are going to listen through one complete cycle and write down four things: when the sound starts, when it stops, whether it changes pitch, and whether it repeats every cycle or only some.
The sequence is predictable. The inducer draft motor runs first and proves venting. The igniter heats. Gas opens and the burners light. Roughly half a minute later the main blower engages. At the end of the call the burners shut off, the blower runs a cool-down, then everything stops.
Map the noise onto that. A sound only in the first thirty seconds, before the blower, is on the combustion or venting side. A sound that arrives exactly when the blower starts, and rises with blower speed, is in the blower or the duct system. A sound present the whole cycle at constant pitch is usually electrical or a motor. A sound after shutdown, especially ticking or popping that fades, is often metal contracting.
Record it on your phone. Thirty seconds of audio tells a technician more than three paragraphs of description, and it means the diagnosis does not depend on the noise cooperating while we are standing there. Intermittent faults are the ones that waste service calls.
A bang or boom at start-up
This one gets its own section for a reason. A hollow thump, bang or whoomp right as the burners light generally indicates that gas accumulated in the burner box before ignition, then lit all at once instead of smoothly.
The general causes sit in the ignition and burner family: burners fouled with rust scale or lint so the flame does not carry across them cleanly, an igniter that is weak or positioned wrong, a flame-sensing problem causing repeated ignition attempts, gas pressure that is off, or a combustion air and venting restriction. Each of those is diagnosed with a manometer, a combustion analyzer, and hands on the actual burner assembly.
What you should do is simple. Stop running the furnace and book a licensed technician. Delayed ignition puts stress on the heat exchanger and the venting, and repeat events are not something to live with through a winter.
Do not attempt burner cleaning yourself. It means opening a gas-carrying assembly, and reassembly errors here are dangerous, not just ineffective. If you smell gas at any point, or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house with everyone in it, then call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside. Do not go back in to check anything, and never bypass a lockout to force the furnace to keep firing.
Rattling, buzzing and vibration
Rattle is the most common furnace noise and the most likely to be genuinely minor. It is also the easiest to misattribute, because sheet metal transmits vibration a surprising distance through a house.
With the furnace running, press a flat hand firmly on the front panel. If the rattle stops or changes, the panel or its screws are the source. Do the same on the return plenum, the supply plenum and the first few feet of duct. A loose screw, a panel not seated in its bottom lip, or a duct strap that has worked loose against a joist all produce a rattle that follows blower operation exactly.
Filter racks are another classic. An undersized or bowed filter vibrating in its slot buzzes at a specific blower speed and goes quiet at others. So does a filter door that no longer latches.
What you can do yourself: check that the filter is the correct size and seated flat, confirm the access panels are properly on and snug, and look for obvious duct straps hanging loose. What you should not do is start tightening things blind inside a running furnace. If the rattle is inside the cabinet rather than on it, particularly anything metallic near the blower, that is a service call. In Lower Mainland strata units there is the added issue of noise carrying to neighbours through shared framing.
A hum with nothing happening
A steady electrical hum that never turns into motion is a specific and useful symptom. Something is energized and not rotating, or a component is buzzing under load.
The common families are a blower motor receiving power but unable to start, an inducer motor in the same condition, a run capacitor degraded so the motor cannot break away, a transformer buzzing, or a contactor or relay chattering. A motor that hums and then trips off after several seconds is describing a locked rotor or a failed start component fairly clearly.
One caution about duration. A motor humming under stall draws heavy current and gets hot. If the furnace is humming and nothing is turning, shut it off at the furnace switch rather than leaving it to keep trying. That protects the motor windings and the board.
There is a harmless version too. Some variable-speed blower motors produce a low electronic hum at low speed that is entirely normal, and a transformer can hum faintly at rest. The distinguishing question is whether the furnace still does its job. Hum plus normal heat is usually character. Hum plus no airflow, no ignition, or a unit that locks out is a fault, and capacitor and motor testing requires a meter and respect for stored charge, so leave that to a technician.
Squealing and screeching
High-pitched squeal almost always comes from something spinning. The useful detail is when it appears and what it does over time.
A squeal that starts the moment the blower engages and holds a steady pitch commonly points to blower motor bearings, or on older belt-driven equipment to a worn or misaligned belt. A squeal that appears only at startup and fades after a minute often means a bearing that is dry when cold. That fade is not improvement. It is the failure being masked by warmth, and it typically gets worse each winter until the motor seizes.
A squeal from the inducer motor sounds different: smaller, thinner, and it shows up in the first fifteen seconds of the cycle before the blower runs. Timing separates the two reliably.
Here is where homeowners get into trouble. Most current blower motors have sealed bearings that cannot be oiled, and spraying lubricant into a motor housing that was not designed for it does damage while briefly quieting the sound. Do not do it. Do not attempt to tension a belt on live equipment either.
What helps is not ignoring it. A bearing caught early is a motor replacement scheduled at your convenience. A bearing ignored until seizure often takes the control board and a winter evening with it.
Scraping and grinding metal
Metal-on-metal scraping is the sound with the shortest decision tree. Shut the furnace off at its switch and call for service. Do not run it to see whether it settles down.
The general cause is contact where there should be clearance. A blower wheel touching its housing because a bearing has worn, a shaft has shifted, or mounting hardware has loosened produces a rhythmic scrape that rises and falls with speed. So does a wheel with a damaged blade or accumulated debris throwing it out of balance. Something that fell into the blower compartment, a dropped screw or a piece of filter media, gives an irregular clatter rather than a rhythm.
Why shut it down instead of waiting for the appointment: a wheel dragging on its housing wears fast, the imbalance loads the bearings further, and continued running turns a blower assembly repair into a larger one. In older Vancouver homes with the furnace in a finished basement or a closet off a bedroom, there is also the practical point that nobody sleeps through this noise.
On arrival a technician kills power, opens the blower compartment, pulls the assembly if needed, checks wheel-to-housing clearance, inspects for debris and cracked blades, tests bearing play by hand, and confirms the wheel is tight on the shaft and balanced before anything goes back together.
Noises that are the ductwork, not the furnace
A fair share of calls that start as furnace noise end up being air moving through metal. Recognising the pattern saves you a diagnostic fee.
A loud boom or oil-can pop from the ceiling or a wall cavity when the blower starts or stops is usually duct panel flex. Large flat sections of sheet metal deflect under pressure change and snap back. It sounds alarming and it is not dangerous, though it is fixable with bracing or cross-breaking.
A steady whistle or a high rush is restriction. The usual culprits are a clogged filter, a filter with too high a pressure drop for the system, closed or blocked supply registers, or return air undersized for the blower. That last one is common in older Lower Mainland houses where a furnace was upgraded but the return trunk never was. Restriction is not just noise. It raises temperature rise across the heat exchanger and shortens its life.
Rumbling that continues after the burners shut off and the blower has stopped is different again, and it points back to the combustion side rather than airflow.
Your checks: replace the filter with the correct size and a reasonable pressure drop, open every supply register, and make sure furniture or rugs are not covering returns. If noise persists with a clean filter and everything open, the duct system needs measuring, not guessing.
