Daikin Ductless Mini-Split not heating / not cooling in Greater Vancouver

Quick answer: A Daikin ductless mini-split that runs but barely changes room temperature is usually dealing with restricted airflow, a mode or sensor setting that is fighting you, a refrigerant charge or leak problem, or a fault the outdoor unit has locked out on. A head that does nothing at all points instead to power, to communication between the indoor and outdoor units, or to a failed control board. Check filters, mode and setpoint yourself, write down any blinking indicator pattern, then have a licensed technician measure airflow, pressures and electrical values before any part is replaced.

The complaint sounds the same almost every time. The head is blowing, the light is on, and the room is still cold. Or the August version: air is moving, the room stays warm, and the outdoor unit sounds like it is working hard for nothing.

A ductless mini-split hides its problems better than a furnace does. There is no burner to watch, no smell, no obvious change in noise. The system quietly loses capacity over weeks, you blame the weather, and then one damp February morning it stops keeping up at all.

Two-minute triage: no output, or weak output?

Split the problem before you troubleshoot it. Stand at the head and answer three things. Is the indoor fan moving air at all? Is the air coming out noticeably warmer or cooler than room air, or just neutral? Is the outdoor unit running, and does its fan spin steadily rather than starting and stopping every couple of minutes?

Fan running, neutral air, outdoor unit silent means the outdoor unit is either not being called, not getting power, or has locked itself out. That is an electrical and controls path.

Fan running, slightly warm or slightly cool air, outdoor unit running continuously means the system is producing something but not enough. That is a capacity problem: airflow, coil condition, charge, or a system that was undersized for the space from day one.

Nothing at all from the head, no lights, no fan, means power to that indoor unit or a dead board.

One head down while others in the house work fine narrows things to that head, its branch circuitry, or the valve serving it.

Write down what you observed with a time stamp before you start changing settings. Half of the wasted diagnostic hours we see come from a homeowner cycling modes and breakers for an hour, clearing whatever the unit was reporting, and then nobody can reproduce the original behaviour.

Settings and sensors that fake a total failure

More ductless “no heat” calls than anyone likes to admit end at the remote. Daikin remotes carry several modes that look identical on a small LCD in a dim hallway.

Dry mode is the classic. It dehumidifies, runs the fan slowly, and produces almost no cooling effect, so on a warm day the room feels stagnant and the unit feels broken. Fan-only mode moves air with no conditioning at all. Auto mode lets the unit choose, which means on a mild Fraser Valley shoulder day it may sit in a deadband and do essentially nothing while you stand there waiting for heat.

Check the setpoint against actual room temperature, not against what you assume you set last week. Check for a timer or weekly schedule that someone enabled and forgot, because a scheduled off-period reads exactly like a failure.

Some Daikin remotes and heads use a sensor in the remote itself or a room-sensing feature that steers output toward wherever the remote is sitting. Leave that remote on a sunny windowsill or under a lamp and the system thinks the room is already warm. Same story with a remote left in a cold entry closet during cooling season.

Also confirm nobody set a fan speed to quiet or night mode, which throttles output deliberately. None of this requires tools. All of it should be ruled out before you pay for a diagnostic.

Airflow first: filters, blower wheel and the indoor coil

A mini-split head moves a small volume of air across a small coil. It has almost no tolerance for restriction, far less than a ducted furnace, so airflow problems show up as lost capacity long before they show up as a fault.

Open the front panel and pull the mesh filters. In a Vancouver home with pets, a wood stove, or an open kitchen, those screens load up fast. Rinse them, dry them fully, put them back. If they were grey and matted, you likely found a real contributor.

Now look past the filters at the aluminum fins. If they are furred with lint, that is not a homeowner job. The same goes for the barrel-shaped blower wheel behind the coil. Ductless blower wheels collect a greasy film, especially in suites where cooking happens close to the head, and once the blades load up the wheel simply stops throwing air even though it is spinning normally. You cannot see this without removing the housing, and you cannot clean it properly with a vacuum through the vanes.

Signs you are looking at fouling rather than a refrigerant issue: airflow feels weaker than it did last year, the head has started smelling musty, or the discharge air is very cold in cooling but the room still will not drop. A proper coil and blower cleaning restores capacity that people routinely assume is lost refrigerant.

Not heating: defrost, ice and how the outdoor unit is sited

Heat pumps in this climate spend the winter pulling heat out of damp, near-freezing air. Moisture condenses on the outdoor coil and freezes there. The unit periodically reverses to melt it off, which is normal and looks alarming: steam, a whoosh at changeover, and the indoor head going quiet or blowing cool for a few minutes.

That cycle is where most Lower Mainland heating complaints actually live. If defrost is running too often, or the coil is not clearing between cycles, effective output collapses. Go look at the outdoor unit during a cold snap. A thin frost that clears within minutes is fine. A solid slab of ice packed into the fins, or ice built up under the unit and freezing it into a block, is not.

Causes we find: the unit mounted too low so meltwater pools and refreezes, no clearance underneath for drainage, the unit tucked under a deck or against a fence where discharge air recirculates, leaves and cedar debris matting the coil, and outdoor fan or defrost sensor faults.

Salt air matters near the water. Homes in Tsawwassen, White Rock, Steveston or along Burrard Inlet see faster corrosion of outdoor coil fins, which reduces heat transfer and makes defrost worse. Rinse the coil gently with plain water in spring, never a pressure washer, and never chip ice off with anything metal.

Also remember output legitimately drops as outdoor temperature falls. Check what backup heat you have and whether it is working.

Not cooling: charge, leaks and why topping up is the wrong answer

A mini-split that cools weakly in July, with clean filters and a clean coil, is usually short on refrigerant. Not because it consumed any, because it lost some. A sealed system does not use refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak.

Common leak points on ductless installs: the flare connections at the indoor head and at the outdoor service valves, the flare nuts themselves if they were over- or under-torqued at install, chafing where the line set passes through the wall sleeve, and coil damage from corrosion or a stray weed trimmer.

Symptoms a technician reads together, not in isolation: suction line frosting near the service valve, an indoor coil icing over in cooling mode, a small temperature difference between return and supply air at the head, and pressures that do not match the outdoor conditions.

Be wary of anyone offering to simply add refrigerant and leave. Inverter-driven Daikin systems are charge-sensitive, the correct charge depends on line-set length, and adding refrigerant on top of an existing leak means you will pay for the same visit again next summer. The right sequence is find the leak, repair it, evacuate the system properly with a vacuum pump and micron gauge, then weigh in the correct charge.

Also check the condensate path in cooling season. A blocked drain from the indoor head can trigger a protective shutdown, and in a Vancouver condo it will damage drywall long before it damages the equipment.

Power, breakers and the wire between indoor and outdoor

When a head shows nothing at all, or the indoor unit runs while the outdoor unit stays dead, the problem is usually electrical rather than refrigerant.

Start at the panel. A ductless system normally has a dedicated breaker. Look for one that is tripped or sitting in the ambiguous middle position. Reset it once, firmly off then on. If it trips again, stop and call. Repeated tripping means a short, a seized compressor, a failing fan motor, or moisture in the outdoor electrical compartment, and resetting it repeatedly is how a nuisance fault becomes a burned board.

Outside, there is usually a disconnect box near the condenser. Rain-driven water intrusion and corrosion in that box are common along the coast. If the cover is cracked or the interior looks rusty, that is a tech visit.

Beyond raw power, the indoor and outdoor units talk to each other over a communication conductor in the interconnecting cable. Rodents in a crawlspace, a nail from a deck project, or a connection loosened by years of vibration will break that conversation. The head then behaves oddly: it runs the fan, accepts commands, and the outdoor unit never responds.

Anything past visually checking a breaker and looking at a disconnect cover means opening live electrical compartments. That is licensed work, not a weekend project, and there are capacitors inside that hold a charge after the power is off.

Multi-zone systems: one head down, the rest fine

Multi-zone Daikin installs behave differently from a single head on a single outdoor unit, and the troubleshooting logic changes with them.

If every head has quit, look upstream: outdoor unit power, outdoor fault lockout, or the compressor. If exactly one head has quit while the others heat or cool normally, the outdoor unit is clearly alive, so the fault sits in that branch. That usually means the electronic expansion valve serving that zone, the valve’s control wiring, the indoor board, or a sensor on that head.

There is a second scenario people misread as a breakdown. Most multi-zone systems cannot run one head in heating while another runs in cooling. Set one bedroom to cool while the living room calls for heat and something has to lose, so a head sits idle or blows neutral air and the homeowner reports it as broken. It is not broken. It is arbitrating. In a Vancouver townhouse with a hot south-facing upper floor and a cold north bedroom, this happens constantly in spring and fall.

Also consider load balance. A single small head cannot condition a whole open-plan main floor no matter how well it works, and a system sized for the original layout will fall behind after a wall comes out or a suite is added.

Reading the fault indication, and knowing when to stop

Daikin indoor units signal faults through blinking indicator lights on the head and, on many models, through a diagnostic display sequence on the remote. Those signals are genuinely useful, and they are also brand-, model- and year-specific.

Do not trust a code meaning you found on a forum. Record exactly what you see: which light, how many blinks, the pause pattern, and any characters the remote displays. Then check that against the manual for your unit or the service label inside the cabinet or behind the front panel. Meanings differ between series and production years, and acting on the wrong interpretation is how a good sensor gets replaced while the actual fault stays.

Broadly, faults fall into families a technician recognises by behaviour: sensor and thermistor faults, outdoor fan or compressor faults, high or low pressure protection, communication faults between units, and drain or float protection. Knowing the family tells you where to point instruments. It does not tell you which part is bad.

Homeowner territory: filters, remote settings, clearing snow, leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit, confirming the breaker, checking that furniture or curtains are not blocking a head.

Not homeowner territory: anything involving refrigerant, opening electrical compartments, removing the blower housing, or resetting a safety lockout. Why does my Daikin mini-split blow cold air in the middle of winter heating?

Most often it is a defrost cycle. The outdoor coil ices up in damp coastal air, so the system briefly reverses to melt it, and the indoor head goes quiet or blows neutral air for a few minutes. That is normal. If it happens constantly, or the head never recovers to warm air afterward, the defrost control, outdoor fan or airflow around the condenser needs a technician’s attention.

Can I add refrigerant to my mini-split myself?

No. Handling refrigerant requires certification, the correct charge depends on your line-set length and model, and inverter systems are unforgiving of small errors. More importantly, a sealed system never consumes refrigerant, so being low always means there is a leak. Adding more without finding and repairing that leak wastes money and vents refrigerant. Have a licensed technician locate the leak, repair it, evacuate properly and weigh in the correct charge.

How often should filters be cleaned on a ductless head?

Check them monthly during heavy use and wash them whenever they look grey rather than waiting for a schedule. Homes with pets, wood heat, open kitchens or nearby construction load filters much faster. Washing takes five minutes: pull, rinse with lukewarm water, dry completely, reinstall. Never run a head with the filters out, because unfiltered air fouls the coil and blower wheel, and that repair costs far more than the filters ever will.

My mini-split works but one room is always cold. Is the unit failing?

Possibly not. A single head can only condition the space it can throw air into, so closed doors, an added wall, a converted suite or a large open plan will leave rooms behind even when the equipment is healthy. Multi-zone systems also cannot heat one zone while cooling another, so a head may sit idle by design. A load and airflow assessment will tell you whether it is capacity, layout, or a fault.

Is it worth repairing an older Daikin mini-split or should I replace it?

It depends on what failed, how the system was installed, and its condition. A blower cleaning, sensor or fan motor is usually worth doing.
