Two things kill outdoor units here, and neither is cold. The first is water. Metro Vancouver hands a heat pump months of near-freezing rain, which means constant defrost cycling, standing water in the base pan, and fin packs that stay wet for weeks at a time. The second is salt. If you can smell the ocean from your yard, your condenser coil is being pickled year-round.

What that produces in practice: a heat pump in a sheltered Coquitlam backyard, serviced every year, on a raised pad with clear drainage, tends to keep working well past the point most people expect. The same model on a White Rock bluff, sprayed by salt fog and sitting in its own puddle, can lose the coil first while the compressor is still perfectly healthy.

There is a second clock nobody thinks about. Refrigerant availability. Older systems built around refrigerants that have been phased down get more expensive to charge every year, and a leak that would be a routine repair on a current unit becomes an argument for replacement instead. That is not a manufacturer defect. It is regulation catching up with the equipment.

So when you ask how long a Carrier heat pump lasts here, the honest answer is a range, and your job is to figure out which end of it your unit is heading toward.

Finding the data plate on your Carrier outdoor unit

Go outside and look at the outdoor cabinet. Somewhere on it there is a metal or foil plate with dense small print: model number, serial number, electrical ratings, refrigerant type, factory charge. On most Carrier outdoor units it sits on the side panel near the refrigerant service valves and the electrical disconnect, roughly at waist height.

Bring a phone with a flash. Take a straight-on photo rather than trying to read it in the rain, then zoom in indoors. The print is stamped or laser-etched and can be faint on older cabinets. If it looks blank, wipe it with a damp cloth, not a wire brush. Aggressive scrubbing has removed more data plates than weather has.

What you want off it: the full model number, the full serial number, and the refrigerant designation. Write all three down. The model number tells a technician what the equipment actually is. The serial tells you when it was made. The refrigerant tells you what a future leak repair will look like.

While you are down there, look at the plate’s surroundings. Chalky white deposits, flaking paint or a plate edge lifting away from the cabinet all say the same thing about how much weather this unit has absorbed. That context matters as much as the date does.

Do not remove any panels to hunt for the plate. Everything you need is on the outside.

Reading the manufacture date out of the serial number

Carrier has used more than one serial-number format over the decades, so the safe approach is to check the pattern rather than assume one.

The common style you will see on residential outdoor equipment is a serial that begins with four digits: two for the week of manufacture and two for the year. A serial starting 1419 was built in roughly the fourteenth week of 2019. If the leading digits look like a plausible week number followed by a plausible year, that is almost certainly what you have.

Older equipment used a different arrangement, with a letter block for the plant and the date digits sitting further into the string. If the leading characters are letters, do not force the week-year reading on them.

The reliable cross-check is simple. Carrier’s own support site accepts a serial number lookup, and any licensed technician can confirm a build date from the model and serial together. Because formats differ by plant and era, treat any date you decode yourself as provisional until it is confirmed against the manufacturer’s records.

One more caution. The build date is not the install date. Equipment can sit in a warehouse or a distributor’s yard for a season or more. A unit built in late one year and installed the following spring is completely normal. If the decoded age and your memory of the install disagree by a year, the plate is probably right and nothing is wrong.

When the plate is unreadable: three other ways to date the system

Corroded plates are common on units that have spent fifteen winters facing the ocean. You still have options.

Start with the municipal permit record. Heat pump installations involve electrical work, and in most Lower Mainland municipalities that generates a permit with a date attached. City permit search portals will often show you the year a mechanical or electrical permit was pulled at your address. That is a hard, dated, third-party record, and it is usually within weeks of the true install date.

Second, look at the indoor equipment. Air handlers, furnaces and coils carry their own data plates, and in a matched system they were almost always installed together. An air handler plate in a dry basement is far more likely to be legible than an outdoor plate in Steveston. Same trick: photograph it, read the serial pattern.

Third, chase the paperwork. Previous owners often leave manuals, a warranty registration card or a startup checklist in the mechanical room. Real estate disclosure statements from your purchase frequently list the age of major systems. Your home insurance file may too.

If all three fail, a technician can still bracket the age from physical evidence: refrigerant type, contactor and control board style, the design of the fan grille and base pan, and the copper’s oxidation. That is an estimate, not a certainty, and we will say so.

Salt air, standing water and what corrosion does to the clock

Coil corrosion is the single most under-appreciated age accelerator on this coast. It works two ways, and homeowners usually only know about one.

The visible kind is galvanic and salt attack on the outdoor coil. Aluminum fins in contact with copper tubing, in the presence of salt-laden moisture, corrode away from the tube. You see white powder, then fins that crumble when touched, then whole sections of the fin pack collapsing. The compressor is fine. The heat exchanger is not. Homes in Tsawwassen, White Rock, Steveston and along the Burrard waterfront see this far earlier than homes in Langley or Port Coquitlam.

The hidden kind is formicary corrosion, which eats pinholes into copper from the inside out. It is driven by organic vapours indoors and outdoors, and the first symptom is not a stain. It is a slow refrigerant loss with no obvious leak point, followed by weak heating, longer run times, and eventually a compressor working against low charge.

Drainage matters too. A unit sitting flat in a puddle rusts its base pan and its fan motor mounts. Every outdoor unit should be raised on a pad or stand with clear space beneath it for meltwater and defrost condensate.

If your unit is within a couple of kilometres of salt water, ask about coated-coil equipment when replacement time comes. It is the one specification that meaningfully buys years here.

What a technician measures to judge remaining life, whatever the age says

Electrical first, because it is fast and it protects everything downstream. Compressor and fan motor amp draw against the rated values on the data plate, capacitor microfarad reading against its printed rating, contactor points for pitting and burning. A weak run capacitor makes a healthy compressor look like a dying one, and it is the cheapest thing in the cabinet. Rule it out before condemning anything expensive.

Refrigerant side second. Suction and liquid pressures, superheat and subcooling, and the temperature split across the indoor coil. These numbers together tell you whether the system is moving the heat it was designed to move. A system that cannot hold a proper split in heating mode is either undercharged, restricted, or has a compressor losing pumping capacity.

Then airflow, because bad airflow fakes every other symptom. Filter condition, blower wheel cleanliness, duct static pressure, indoor coil face for dust matting.

Last, mechanical and structural. Coil condition, base pan integrity, fan blade balance, mounting hardware, defrost sensor and reversing valve function.

A fifteen-year-old unit that passes all of this has years left. A seven-year-old unit with a corroded coil and low subcooling that will not hold charge may not. The measurements outrank the birthday every time.

Age bands: what each one usually means for repair versus replacement

Rough framing, not a rule. Your measurements override this.

In the first several years, treat almost any failure as a repair. Parts warranty is frequently still active if the unit was registered, and the failures you see at this stage are typically capacitors, contactors, control boards and sensors. Replacing a young system because of a two-hundred-dollar part is throwing away a decade of remaining life.

In the middle years, the question becomes the cost of the repair relative to the condition of the rest of the machine. A fan motor on a clean unit with a healthy coil is easy to justify. The same motor on a unit whose coil is visibly failing is money spent on a machine that has another fatal problem queued up behind it.

Once a unit reaches the later end of its expected life, the calculus changes. A compressor replacement or a major coil replacement on an older system usually costs a large fraction of new equipment, on a machine with no warranty, running an older refrigerant, at an efficiency tier well behind current models. That is generally the point to price replacement instead.

Two overrides in either direction. Any unit that has needed multiple significant repairs in consecutive seasons is telling you something. And any unit that measures well, however old, is not a candidate for replacement just because a salesperson decoded a serial number.

Buying back years: what maintenance genuinely changes

Not all maintenance is equal. Some of it is theatre. These are the items that actually move service life on this coast.

Rinse the outdoor coil. Plain water from a garden hose, gentle pressure, from the inside of the coil outward where you can reach, with the power off at the disconnect. Twice a year is reasonable near salt water, once elsewhere. This is genuinely a homeowner job. Pressure washers are not — they fold fins flat and turn a cleanable coil into a restricted one.

Keep clearance. Cedar hedges, recycling bins, lattice screens and stacked firewood all choke airflow. Give the unit open space on all sides and above, and keep the base clear so defrost water drains away instead of pooling and freezing.

Change filters on schedule. Restricted airflow raises compressor discharge temperature, and heat is what wears compressors out. A five-dollar filter protects the most expensive component in the system.

Book annual professional service and insist it includes electrical readings and refrigerant measurements, not just a visual look. Catching a slowly failing capacitor or a small refrigerant loss early is the difference between a small repair and a compressor.

My Carrier unit is old but still heats fine. Should I replace it?
