It’s usually airflow. A return that’s too small, a filter someone upgraded to a thick pleated cartridge without checking static pressure, a supply trunk that was sized for a 1970s gas furnace and never touched when the AC went in. The compressor works harder against a coil it can’t move enough air across, and the meter keeps spinning.

How efficiency is actually rated — and where to find your unit’s real number

SEER2 is a seasonal average across a range of outdoor conditions. EER2 is a single-point rating at a hot design condition. Find your outdoor unit’s model and serial number on the data plate (usually a sticker on the side of the cabinet near the service valves), then look that exact combination up on the AHRI Directory of Certified Product Performance or on Carrier’s own spec sheet for your model. The AHRI listing shows the certified rating for your specific indoor/outdoor pairing.
If you can’t find a matching AHRI listing, that’s useful information too — it can mean the indoor coil and outdoor unit were never certified as a pair, which sometimes shows up on older retrofits. A technician can confirm what’s installed and whether the pairing is a documented match.
Run-hours: why the Lower Mainland changes the math
Cooling cost is efficiency multiplied by run-time, and on the coast the run-time side of that equation is short. Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley get a genuinely mild cooling season compared with almost anywhere else in Canada, with the heat concentrated into a few weeks rather than spread across four months.
What that means practically: a jump to a higher-efficiency Carrier tier pays back over fewer operating hours here than it would in a hot inland climate. The efficiency difference is real, but the number of hours you’re multiplying it by is smaller. That’s not an argument against efficient equipment — it’s an argument for making the sizing and installation decisions correctly first, because those affect every single hour the unit runs.
Geography shifts this within the region. Homes in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley and Maple Ridge see meaningfully more cooling demand than homes in West Vancouver or on the water in Steveston, where the marine influence keeps afternoons cooler. So when you’re comparing your bill to a neighbour’s, check the obvious things first: thermostat setpoint, hours occupied, sun exposure, insulation, window area and orientation. Those account for more spread between homes than the nameplate efficiency does.
Oversizing is the most expensive install mistake nobody sees
An oversized air conditioner cools the room to setpoint fast, shuts off, and repeats. Short cycling. It feels like it’s working — the air gets cold quickly — but it’s a costly failure mode.
Here’s the mechanism. A compressor draws its highest current at startup, and the first minutes of a cycle are the least efficient part of the run. A properly sized system spends most of its time in a long steady cycle where it’s operating near its rated efficiency. An oversized one never gets there. It also fails to dehumidify, because moisture removal happens across the coil over time, not instantly. In a damp coastal climate that shows up as a house that’s cold but still feels clammy, which pushes people to lower the setpoint further and burn more energy chasing comfort they can’t get that way.
Proper sizing comes from a heat gain calculation — an industry load calculation that accounts for floor area, insulation levels, window area and orientation, air leakage, occupancy and local design temperature. Not from square footage rules of thumb, and definitely not from matching whatever tonnage was there before.
In older Vancouver housing stock this matters twice over, because many homes have had windows, insulation or additions changed since the original system went in. Change the filter on schedule with the correct size and type. Keep two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit — trim back cedar hedges, salal, and anything else that’s grown in over the season. Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a garden hose from the inside out where you can reach, with the power off at the disconnect, using low pressure. A pressure washer will bend the fins and make things worse. Make sure supply registers aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs, and don’t close off registers in unused rooms — on most residential systems that raises static pressure rather than saving energy. Not homeowner jobs: anything involving the refrigerant circuit, electrical work inside the cabinet beyond resetting a tripped breaker once, charge adjustment, capacitor or contactor replacement, and any work on the gas furnace section if your indoor unit is a gas furnace with an add-on coil. Running the blower on the FAN ON setting continuously costs energy and, in a damp climate, can re-evaporate moisture off the coil back into the house between cooling cycles. AUTO is the better default for most homes.
If some rooms overheat while others freeze, the answer is usually airflow balancing or zoning, not a bigger unit. A tech can measure register airflow and adjust dampers. Adding capacity to fix a distribution problem just makes an oversized system.
