Sound is genuinely useful diagnostic information. Start by describing the noise properly — timing matters more than volume
Before you touch anything, gather four pieces of information. When does it happen: at startup, continuously while running, only on shutdown, or randomly? Does the pitch change with fan speed? Is it coming from the outdoor condenser, the indoor air handler or furnace cabinet, or from the ductwork in the walls and ceilings? And is it new, or has it been creeping up for a season?
That last question separates two very different calls. A noise that appeared overnight usually means something moved, broke, or got into the unit. A noise that has been slowly getting louder over months usually means wear — bearings, mounts, a fan blade slowly going out of balance.
Stand outside at the condenser while someone raises the thermostat setting indoors. You should hear the contactor click, then the compressor start, then the fan. If the sound is present in that first second and disappears, it is a startup event. If it builds and stays, it is running behaviour.
Record it on your phone. Genuinely — a ten second video with the sound audible saves a technician real time, especially with intermittent noises that politely stop the moment a van pulls up. Note the outdoor temperature too. Some noises only show up on the handful of genuinely hot Lower Mainland afternoons when the system is working hardest and head pressure is highest.
Banging and booming: usually mechanical, occasionally the ductwork
A single hard bang when the system shuts off is often not the air conditioner at all. It is sheet metal ductwork or the plenum flexing as pressure drops — the same expansion pop you hear from a metal roof. Annoying, generally harmless, and often fixable with additional support or a flexible connector at the cabinet.
Repeated banging from inside the outdoor unit is different, and it deserves respect. A loose or failing internal component in the compressor, broken mounting hardware, or something that has fallen into the cabinet can all produce it. So can the fan blade contacting the shroud or grille after the unit shifted on its pad. That last one is common here: pads settle in soft, wet Fraser Valley ground, the cabinet tilts a degree or two, and clearances change.
A dull thud at startup, once, then normal running, points toward the compressor labouring to start. That is an electrical or mechanical load question a technician needs to measure, not guess at.

Rattling and buzzing: the cheapest problem you’ll ever have, or an electrical one
Rattling is the most common AC noise complaint and the most likely to have a boring cause. Carrier condensers are sheet metal boxes full of screws, and screws back out over years of vibration. A loose top panel, a service panel that was not fully seated after a past visit, or a grille screw missing entirely will buzz in sympathy with the compressor.
Debris causes the rest. Cottonwood fluff, cedar needles, moss fragments and small branches collect in the base pan and against the coil. In neighbourhoods with mature trees — East Van, parts of Burnaby, older Surrey subdivisions — this happens every single spring. Debris in the fan path produces an irregular rattle that changes as the fan speeds up.
What you can safely do: with the system off at the thermostat and the outdoor disconnect pulled, look through the top grille and clear leaves and twigs by hand. Rinse the outside of the coil fins gently with a garden hose, straight in, low pressure, never a pressure washer.
What you should not do: remove the electrical access panel. Capacitors hold a charge after power is off.
A persistent electrical buzz — a low, steady 60 Hz drone at the unit that is not tied to fan rotation — often points to a contactor or a component not fully engaging. That is a licensed technician’s job with a meter, not a visual inspection.
Humming without starting: the classic hot-afternoon failure
This is the call HeatLand gets most on the first genuinely warm week of the year. The thermostat calls, the outdoor unit hums, the fan doesn’t turn or turns very slowly, and after some seconds everything shuts down. Sometimes the homeowner gives the fan blade a nudge with a stick and it spins up — which is a real diagnostic clue and also a good way to lose a finger, so please don’t.
A motor that hums but will not start is being fed power and cannot produce enough torque to turn. That points toward the starting circuit, the motor itself, or a mechanical bind. Technicians check in a specific order: confirm incoming voltage, check the run capacitor’s measured capacitance against its own rating, inspect the contactor’s contacts for pitting, then test the motor windings and check whether the shaft turns freely by hand with power off. That order exists because each step rules out a cheaper cause before you condemn an expensive part.
A hum from indoors, at the furnace or air handler, is usually the blower motor or a transformer, and follows the same logic.

Squealing and screeching: bearings, belts, and pressure
A high-pitched squeal that rises and falls with fan speed is almost always rotational. Motor bearings dry out, and once they do the sound gets worse quickly. On older indoor equipment with belt-driven blowers — still out there in pre-1990 Vancouver houses and some converted duplexes — a squeal on startup that fades after a minute often points to belt tension or alignment rather than the motor.
Damp coastal air does not help. Bearings in outdoor units sit through eight months of rain and then get asked to run hard for six weeks. Units within sight of the water in Steveston, White Rock or along the North Shore also deal with salt-laden air, which corrodes fasteners, coil fins and motor housings faster than inland equipment. If you are near the ocean, expect outdoor components to age faster and inspect them more often.
A different, more serious sound: a loud screech or shriek from the compressor area, especially at startup, can indicate high internal pressure. That is not a wait-and-see noise. Shut the system down.
Grinding is its own category and always means metal on metal. Bearings that have failed completely, or a fan blade contacting the shroud. There is no homeowner fix and no benefit to running it. Turn it off, and get a licensed technician out before the motor seizes and takes other parts with it.
Clicking, gurgling and hissing: controls and the sealed system
A single click at startup and another at shutdown is normal. That is the contactor pulling in and dropping out. Constant, rapid clicking is not normal and usually means a control is chattering — cycling on and off faster than it should — which can come from a control-circuit problem, a safety device opening and closing, or a thermostat wiring fault. It wears contacts quickly.
Gurgling or a soft bubbling from the refrigerant lines is worth mentioning to your technician but is not automatically alarming. Refrigerant moving through the metering device makes noise, and some of it is normal for the design. A change in that noise, paired with weaker cooling or ice forming on the line at the outdoor unit, is more meaningful than the sound alone.
Hissing deserves attention. A steady hiss can be normal pressure equalization after shutdown, lasting a minute or so. A hiss that persists while running, particularly near a joint or the service valves, can indicate a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is not something to top up and ignore — a system that loses charge has a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding it is money poured into the air. It is also regulated work requiring certification.

Outdoor units in this region live a specific life. Long wet winters, moss and algae growth on the coil and cabinet, cottonwood season, and then a short intense cooling season. Corrosion loosens fasteners; loose fasteners rattle. That is why a spring inspection catches so many noise complaints before they start.
Installation location drives a lot of it too. Units mounted on brackets against a wall transmit vibration directly into the house framing — you hear it in the bedroom rather than the yard. Units on pads sitting in soft ground settle unevenly. Stratas add another layer. Many buildings have bylaws covering outdoor equipment noise and placement, and some municipalities have their own residential noise limits and setback expectations. Never box a condenser in for quietness without confirming clearances; starving it of air causes real damage.
If your unit is also a heat pump, the defrost cycle in winter produces whooshing, hissing and a reversing-valve clunk. That is designed behaviour, not a fault.
