So treat AFUE as one input. A mid-tier furnace installed well, in a sealed duct system, with a properly matched thermostat, will often cost less to run than a premium unit bolted onto neglected ducts. We see that comparison in real homes constantly.
Sizing: the single biggest cost lever, and the one nobody checks
Oversizing is the most common expensive mistake in Metro Vancouver furnace installs, and it is almost invisible to a homeowner. An oversized furnace satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, and repeats — short-cycling. Every cycle has a startup penalty: the inducer purges the heat exchanger, the burners light, and it takes time for the exchanger to reach steady operating temperature. Cut the burn short and you paid for that warm-up without collecting the full benefit.
Short-cycling also wears the ignition components, the inducer and the gas valve faster, so you feel it in repair costs later, not just fuel.
Our climate makes this worse rather than better. Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and the North Shore have a long shoulder season — weeks of 6 to 10 degree days where a correctly sized furnace would run gentle, long cycles and an oversized one barely stays lit. Single-stage, two-stage and modulating: how staging changes run cost
A single-stage furnace has one output level: full. It fires hard, hits setpoint, stops. A two-stage furnace can run at a reduced firing rate for most of the season and only step up to full when the load demands it. A modulating furnace adjusts across a range rather than in steps.

A staged furnace spends those days on low fire, running long, steady cycles — fewer startups, more even temperatures, less overshoot, and less of the on-off swing that makes people push the thermostat up.
Staging also lets the blower run slower and quieter for longer stretches, which improves distribution to the far rooms in a long ranch-style Delta home or a three-storey Coquitlam layout where the top floor cooks and the basement freezes.
Check your American Standard model’s literature to confirm which category yours falls into — brand naming conventions change and the physical clue (two gas valve solenoid wires, a two-stage pressure switch arrangement) isn’t something to guess at from a photo. The blower motor: your quiet electricity bill
People budget for gas and forget the furnace also runs on electricity. The blower motor moves every cubic foot of air through your house, and over a long heating season the hours add up.

ECM and variable-speed motors ramp — they run slow and low-draw most of the time and only spin up when the load calls for it. A furnace can only be as efficient as the duct system attached to it. Filters are the homeowner’s job and the fastest fix. A thick pleated filter left in for a year is a restriction. Check it monthly during heating season and change it when it looks loaded, not on a calendar date someone guessed at.
Static pressure testing — reading the pressure drop across the system with a manometer — is how a technician quantifies all of this instead of eyeballing it. Ask for the numbers.
Venting, combustion air and the condensate side
How your furnace vents tells you a lot about its efficiency class. High-efficiency condensing furnaces vent through plastic pipe out a sidewall and produce acidic condensate that has to drain. Mid-efficiency units vent hot flue gas up a metal chimney or B-vent. That difference isn’t cosmetic — the condensing unit is extracting heat that the other one sends outside.
In our climate the condensate side deserves attention. Damp coastal air, long run times and cool crawlspaces mean condensate traps and drain lines that clog with biofilm or freeze in an unheated space. When drainage backs up, the pressure switch sees it and the furnace locks out. Homeowners read that as a random fault; it’s usually a plugged trap.
Sidewall vent terminations near ground level in Richmond or Ladner can get blocked by snow, leaves or shrubs. Keep both the intake and exhaust clear. That’s homeowner territory and it’s worth a look before any cold snap.
Combustion air matters too. A furnace closed into a small utility room without adequate makeup air can’t burn cleanly. If you ever smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call the gas utility and a licensed technician from outside. Do not restart the unit.
Thermostat behaviour, setbacks and how your habits show up on the bill

Moderate, consistent setbacks are the safer default.
Watch for two habits that quietly cost money. Cranking the thermostat to 28 to warm the house faster does nothing — a furnace has one or two output levels and doesn’t go faster because you asked louder; it just overshoots and you pay for the extra. And fighting a cold room by raising the whole-house setpoint means heating every other room to compensate for one balancing or duct problem.
Smart thermostats help, but they must be wired and configured for your furnace’s staging. A two-stage furnace controlled as if it were single-stage never uses low fire. That’s a common miswire we find, and correcting it costs nothing but a service call.
